Hi all, I'm new here but i hope that someone may be able to help.
My defender 110, 2.5 td engine runs real bad. When started from cold it misfires and blows blue/white smoke. As soon as it reaches normal working temp everything is alright and it runs perfectly well.
I have changed the fuel filters and the injectors but nothing makes any difference. The same thing was happening on the original engine (which i have replaced). This engine has only done around 15000 miles.
If anyone can come up with any suggestions i would be very grateful.
Thanks in advance

This is a strange one.. Usualy white smoke means water in cylinders ie head gasket problem, blue smoke could be a few things but basicaly your burning oil. My first thought would be head gasket, but why would it be ok when warm?????
Are you using any oil and water? have you checked for oil in the water and vice versa???

Hi again,

This has had me and a couple of garages bafflesd for some time now. The only oil i'm losing is from a small leak, but it is losing a SMALL amount of water.

It's more the misfiring at startup and until the temp reaches normal that i'm worried about. One guy told me to look for oil in the aircleaner, there was some but not a lot but even after cleaning it all out there was no improvement.

I suppose having tried all other things the next alternative is to have the injection pump serviced, Maybe somehow the pump timing has slipped.

Any other possibilities that anyone can think of would be very much appreciated.

Just a thought, could be the head gasket seal between the water jacket and the cyl bores has broken, this would cause some water to flow into the bore when engine just stopped due to the water pressure, but once started the flow of water will travel through the jacket so missife is only present on start up
.
hope this helps...

I can't see that it could be the head gasket because the same thing was happening to the old engine before i replaced it.
Any other ideas would be much appreciated, but i'm going to get the injector pump checked out as a next step.
Thanks again

I seem to have got the wrong end of the stick, ok, this replacement engine are you using the old engines deisel pump, if so, who set up the timing? if not and its a pump that came with your engine its highly unlikly to have the same fault, therfore it may be fuel related, ie water in the tankor system, of course this is all rubbish if Ive not got all the facts, let me know asap, cheers

Just another thought, have you checked the crankcase breather setup, hoses ect... worth a look if they are cracked leaking or blocked it can cause eratic running, ok thats all for now speak to you all later

Hi again, The new engine came from "Turner Engineering", maybe you have heard of them. reputable re built landrover engine company.

Yes it's the pump from the old engine and the garage who fitted the engine timed up the pump.
I'm having the injectors tested on Tuesday but they are relativly new anyway. After that, if it's not injectors i guess it MUST be the pump, anyway thats the next move. Had the turbo checked today to see if oil was leaking past the seals but thats fine as well.
Any more ideas would be gratefully received............just as long as the remedies are not expensive. Ha, this is alraedy getting costly..............

Crankcase breather and related pipes and hoses are all ok...............

Pulling my hair out on this one now..........still......tomorrows another day...
Maybe a large hammer or petrol and matches may help!!!!!!!

Hi keeper, well by the sounds of it you are looking at the pump its self, I dont think the pump 2 engine timing is the problem as its very unlikely to have been out on the old engine and the new one. Could the garage not stick another pump on for you so that you could do a cold start before purchasing this very expensive bit?.. of course they may not have one spare...

just one other thought have you ever found any water in the diesel?

plz let us know how it all goes, aside from the costs and trouble to yourself this has been an interesting post.
cheers

Hi Banzia,
No one seems to have a spare pump that i can try. I'm gonna get the pump refurbed at a cost of around £80. (friend doing it. thats why it's so "cheap").
Pump to engine timing is spot on so i know it's not that.
Last time i changed the fuel filter there was a small amount of rust in the filter...........so maybe thats the problem............rust in the pump......and maybe in the tank.
Pump will be back on the engine by next Sunday, I'll be sure to let you know the outcome.
Damned engines.haha

Just one more thing for you to try as i have just had the problem you are talking about. Check the EGR (exhaust gas release valve) you can block it off or knock it with a hammer. Sometimes the valve sticks. I just recently changed my fuel pump, turbo and few other things... only to find that was the problem.

Hi Garybrun,

Thanks for the tip about the Exhaust gas release valve. I'll certainly have a look at that.

BUT!!! seeing as i have never even heard of an EGR please can you tell me where to find it and what it looks like?

Thanks in advance

Richard

This is a final update for all you guys who have been reading this post and coming up with some ideas about the problem.

At long last i have got the injection pump back from being refurbished. Fitted it last night and lo and behold.......no smoke, no misfiring!!!.
The pump was full of rust and somehow the pump timing had been altered.
Anyway, thanks to all you guys for offering your ideas.

Next thing is to replace the rear bumber bar(where to tow pack fits). Anyone know how hard this is to do???

Damn landrovers........but we all love them....????
