P38A Smaller air filter?

I want to free up some space in the engine bay for things, has anyone replaced the air box with one of those 'performance' barrel filters? Any problems encountered? I'm not looking for increased performance, if it's as good as the stock air box but significantly smaller that's all I'm after.

Why do you want it smaller?

I want to put a larger EAS pump and potentially a second battery in there.

+1. Cables can run down the chassis legs.

Cannot remember if his is a petrol? They have a nice setup to catch small amounts of water before it reaches the inlet manifold. On the other hand, having the inlet a bit higher than that inside wing might stop the necessity.

Prolly an upgrade i'll do myself to run some accessories..

It is a petrol. Is the 'thing to catch small amounts of water' the small box hanging off the air inlet pipe? I wondered what that was for. By small amounts of water, do you mean rain or ingress from wading? I never take the car off road, and doubt I ever will so if I'd lose some off road wading ability by ditching the airbox for a barrel filter thing I'm not too fussed.

I just replaced it,

Aftermarket air filters if its an oiled type can bugger up the maf sensor.

Yes and wading.

I overdid the wading crossing a river that was a running a bit higher than I expected. When I got back and checked the air filter on my turbo-wheezel it was splashed with muddy river-water. Damn nearly touched cloth.

What's an 'oiled type'? I'm looking at something like this:

Any MAF issues likely to result from using that?

KN filters are oiled,but we have had cases of bad running on the v8`s that have been down to aftermarket filters.

Assuing the door seals are in good order the car can wade pretty well..

If you soak a paper element it should be replaced, an oiled filter should be cleaned.. etc etc

@Henry_b how deep have you been in a P38? defender would go so the water was up to my belly but it only had stop switch no becm or door seals. Too frightened try it with my princess I've heard of a guy moved BECM into the roof - good luck doing that headlining

Yes the paper elements are shot after a soaking but the doozle one is oversized and can manage quite easy (mine is I've seen two different sizes) unless you are wading to the underwater motor factors at the time just dry it. Can always keep spare in boot but I wouldn't bother.

Not a patch on a stock paper filter.

I've been above the bumper and wheel arches which is when I sucked up some water. I'd advise against it though. Dopey has been in over the bonnet and survived. Mind you, I think he was towed out.

Okay, new idea: just to the left of the EAS box further down there's the chassis rail, could I mount my pump to that just inside where the suspension is fixed to it? Ignoring the possibility of wading (I'll never do that) is there much chance of it getting soaked by splash from the road or anything there?
