Hi All,

After 'playing' with my mates landy for many years I have finally bought my own Disco II 03 2.5 TD5 Auto ..... when I pull away from completely stationary there is a 1 or 2 seconds of crawling very slowly before it feels like the turbo kicks in and then it goes like a rocket (so to speak). Having not driven an auto disco before has anyone else expereinced this ? Could it be a lag in the turbo or is it just simply the weight of the disco on the auto box ? This happens just the same if I manually select 1st ....

Cheers !

Hi

You could have problems with the autobox, however, autoboxes normally just quit due to the way they operate.

Turbo lag by how I understand it is when you try to accelerate nothing happens till you hit a certain rpm.

Could say if it was a petrol the plugs cause this, a diesel doesn't use plugs just glow plugs. Have you checked to see if you have a vacuum leak, or pipe.

You may need to gearbox and engine serviced (less this has been done)

Never driven the Disco II I'm not really familiar with it's workings, although an autobox is an auto box and a TD5 is a TD5.

Dumb question what happens if you lift the rear wheels ? because a viscous coupling will do that.

Hope this helps some how. Others out there will know more than me on this.

I read an article recently in one of the many LR magazines that discussed this very thing. If I remember rightly, it was written by an ex LR experience instructor ( but I could be wrong, its been known before.....in 1973 I think....) Its a common problem, that the writer seemed to be able to explain away somehow, I`ll try and find the magazine.
However, you obviously paid a lot of money for the car, if I were you, I would take it back to the dealer you bought it from and get them to confirm everything is working ok. Ask them if they have another similar model to compare your to and have a test drive of that one. If it is a LR dealer, you should have no problems doing this.
Anyway, I`ll look for the article and let you know what was said( if I can find it).
