Sloppy high/low gear lever

Just a quick question (couldn't find anything relevant in search.)

I noticed my little high/low/diff lock gear selector seems to be very loose and sloppy. To the best of my knowledge, it still works as it should, but it feels like the proverbial bowl of porridge.

Should there be a feeling of "guides" like in a normal gearbox?

It's a bit similar to the sloppiness I got in my main gearstick when the grub screw came out.

Any ideas please gents (and gentessess')

are youn sure it still works , has a ball that the shaft runs through can break or circilp come off

Yep, I'm sure it works ok (though haven't verified diff lock yet) but when I put it in LOW ratio it definitely goes into low and it goes back to high again when I ask it, it just feels like there is no "guides" or "gates" to it and when it's in any position, I can mover the lever sideways as if into the diff lock position while still driving etc.
It may well be, as you suggest, a free moving ball or circlip off. I'll try and get a look at it this week-end.
