Evening,

Wondering if anyone has and if it is possible to have a single differential brake to make the ones on the wheels obsolete?

I suppose anything is possible, depending on cost and expertise.
Altho for a road going vehicle not sure of the legality.
Why would you want to do it?

Cheers

I remember seeing one member changing the drum brake on the prop shaft for a disc brake, but for the reasons given above, that brake was the handbrake or parking brake. Also, there's a certain amount of backlash in the diff to take into account, I don't know if you've ever stopped on a hill, applied the handbrake and taken you foot off the main brakes, there's that running back as the backlash is taken up.

I have to ask, how difficult is it to check and clean a normal brake set up after off roading? along with checking everything else.

I have never found it a hardship.

Cheers

You're very right, but it's curiosity of doing it and seeing if it's possible....And as pointed out previously, road legal

It's just a bad idea for sooooo many reasons, unbalanced braking, halfshafts/drive members/diff become part of the brake system, distance between what you want to stop(wheels) and what you are stopping it with may exaggerate forces etc etc

I wouldn't even want to consider going there.

I could see the benefit of a brake acting within the transmission (like the handbrake does) IN ADDITION to the 4 wheel brakes.... but the idea of only having one brake for the whole vehicle is scary.

If one of your wheel brakes fails, there are three others which will hopefully stop you, as well as the transmission handbrake in a real emergency. If one of your brakes is operating at a low efficiency, the others can take up the slack

With just one brake, you only get one chance.

Some very early cars were built with only a transmission brake... there is a reason why drum, and later disc, brakes were fitted to cars!

Thanks for all your replies! Makes sense not to do it and also my clutch has started slipping so no have better things to do!
