Over 10 years ago I owned a series III which was great fun but in the end a bit too basic for my wife and succumbed to rust. I have a patrol now which has been great but I miss my landrover so its sale.

I dont really want to spend more than 4k and I have had a look around and seen both older 2.5td 90's and als tdi 90's.(Csw)

Any views on which is easier to live with, reliable etc. I am not a mechanic so will rely on the local garage to fix things

Cheers

Tdi's are more refined and more power. but fetch silly money at the mo. might be worth getting a TD and living with it until you can afford to get a disco 200tdi engine to transplant into it.

I faced the same dilemma a few weeks ago.

I knew nothing and was advised by 3 seperate sources to avoid the 2.5 TD at all costs.

I have bought a 200 TDi K reg, cost me just over 3K. I have a growing list of things to do now I have it, all of which will cost a bit.

So in short. Get as new a TDi as you can.

For 4K you should be well newer than me.

Good luck!!

tdi. i 200tdi is great, 300tdi is a bit better but not much in it. the 300tdi is a newer engine so likely to be lower miles. i have a 200tdi, couldn't imagine just how slow a td would be!!

People say the TD is ****, and most often there right, but if you get it working properly, and KEEP it that way(easier said than done some times) it will happly cruise at 75mph, however it will take some time to get there and will be drinking diesel(I get about 25mpg on a run at75mph fully loaded)

That said it's not too bad a little engine, but the tdi is miles better :)

if you do end up getting a TD you MUST make sure you try to start it from COLD, and take the oil filler cap off and see how much back pressure there is(which is a sign of a worn engine), and also take it for a good run- don't get one that tops out at 5560mph as it's going to cost a fortune to fix, and make sure you join the AA and your covered for a tow HOME, as it will brake on you at some point(but can usually be fixed at the road aide if you have a selection of common parts including the injector pipes, and a bit of pipe to by-pass the turbo, and a decent supply of oil

have I sold you one yet:)

Thanks for everyone's advice

I must admit I was looking at the TDi unless I was heavily persauded by you experts otherwise !

I know they need work ( my experience with my series 3 proved that ) but I have always just loved the brand so adding and updating is not problem as long as it doesnt cost me an arm and a leg !

I will start looking
Thanks
