still havent decided on replacement media - i have narrowed it down to iron silicate or Medium Glass grit

yes - but different media is more reusable than others.

Ok , next stupid question, how do you separate the media from the crud ? Magnets ?

Using a mesh grid. I pass the crud through a 4mm and then a 2mm sieve into a bucket, and then through a domestic sieve into the blast pot.
Always drop the crud from a reasonable height, so that any dust can be blown away.
