Hi. Just about to finish my S3 109 ex MOD with tilt and need to get it MOT'd. Trouble is, it isn't insured and when I spoke to my company about it before they said it HAD to be on a Military Vehicle policy as it is an ex MOD 109 GS.

So the question is, does anyone know of where I can get a cheap policy, preferably a short term policy of 1 month or so, so that I don't have to waste a year of my life phoning around, or get inundated with spam for years to come by using online quotes? Surely there must be some policy that just covers summer shows? I only want to MOT it and sell it on, preferably with a bit of tax.

The motor is in this link:

Insurance co is talking crap. Find a new one..i'd recommend a classic policy with footman james. I give £120 a year and they dont care if you dont have any NCB.

As for MOT you can legally drive it to a station where you have pre-booked with no tax.

Footman James IS my company... got 3 others with them. Last year they quoted £135 for Military Vehicle policy, but bit steep just to MOT and sell it on.

T'bugger is taxed til end of Feb, but as you say, that is not a problem for MOT.

Just got to fit the passenger footwell next week, touch up a couple of spots of paint, fix the windscreen squirters and adjust the handbrake. Sell it on and get an '88 S3 with tilt. 109 too long for my parking space for it.

I tried getting a short term policy various places and tbh it was really expensive...50 a month minimum...it was better to buy a years worth...still have no idea why they insist on you insuring it as military vehicle..very odd.

Ok mate, thanks for that. Saved me a lot of time! I'll get back on to them and try a regular classic policy with pro rata cancellation rights. Funnily enough, they knew it was ex MOD as soon as I gave them the reg! Up til then I was on to a classic policy..

I maybe mistaken but if your going to buy another why not insure this one till it sells then switch vehicles on the policy, i assume the only cost will be an admin one as they are similar landys. Not sure if this is aloud on a classic car policy but can't see why not.

If I buy another it will be needing long term 'work' so will be in the garage for months. Looks like I will just have to ensure I can cancel the policy and get a pro rata refund. Thanks anyway guys!

If it's taxed but not insured then it's illegal whether it's on the road or not - new laws came in at the start of the year.
