Well its been acouple of weeks now since the new pump in fuel tank was fitted , and she is running like her old self ,starts first time every time, put in new air filter last week [that is a pig of a job] very poor design. . .checked rear brake drums today, dont need changing so just cleaned out dust[always use a good dust mask] and anti seize on pivit points and job done , been thinking of upgrade for engine to get a bit more grunt [td4] anyone got any advice on this subject,as new to the freeland world any help would be nice . . . :)

Glad she is now back on song, it was always going to be a fuel delivery issue with your last fault :)

I have just fitted a K+N performance air filter to my wife's TD4 and it does make a good improvement to the acceleration and mid range grunt:D

I'm always a bit wary of a 'CHIP' upgrade for a car as no 2 engines are ever the same and the 1 chip covers all is a bit iffy for me. Now if somebody was to re-map the car from scratch taking into account any other mods that is a different matter, as just throwing boost at an engine without correct ignition advance and fueling is always going to end in tears.

Cheers the Zip . . . Wots it like to fit a k n filter i mean is like difficult or can a cluts like me do it, and also Zip whats the best place to get one . . .

Danger

Excess Oil migrating from the K&N filter is known to mess up the MAF and that’s going to knackers your performance and cost you £154 +vat for a new one if you cant clean it off! This is a known problem with fitting them to all motors!

Ming, i bought mine from dealer near where i live called Waxacar, they have a website and it helps that K+N are based in Warrington so delivery was within 24 hours. It cost £52 and is a doddle to fit the hard part is re-fitting the airbox cover which can be a pain.

To cover the point about MAF failures, in my experiance the only filters that have caused me and others problems with excessive oil are ITG which in my Subaru Impreza covered the MAF in goo and it failled (£360) but a bit of cleaning and my warranty took care of it.The K+N item isnt covered as much as the ITG and its been in the TD4 now for just on a month and its fine, time will tell but so far i'm happy.

The MAF is the Mass Air Flow sensor, it detects the rate of air entering the induction and adjusts the fuelling to match, any problems with it can cause your car to run rich or lean.

Me personally i wouldnt go for the 57i type cone filter as you really need them mounting in the inner wing away from warm air in the engine bay and then the price increases as you need to go for the Typhoon type, cold air kit for lots more money and for me not enough gain.

After looking in the engine bay and seeing where the cone would end up, I thought it a bit strange that they tell you "cold, dense air is the best" even though the digram for the cone has it right inside the engine bay. Mmmm yea the 57i idea is binned. Thank for the advice. Maybe consider alternative filter suppliers.
