Hi! I have a series 3 and it’s started to shake, particularly through the steering wheel under acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear seems to go away in 4th. Not sure if it’s the gear or the speed that’s making a difference… apart from wheel balance would anything else cause this?
Thanks!

As a start
Check all the fixings / balljoints from steering box to front wheels
Check wheels hub nuts and wheel nuts
Check prop shafts universal joints for play and fixings
Check swivels top and bottom bolts

does engine sound ok , if running on 3 cylinders it can rock the engine

That’s all beyond me so off to the garage. Any recommendations?

maybe, maybe not … have a look… just a look - dry UJs are easy to spot - as are missing balance weights ( there’ll be a clean bit on the prop where it has fallen orft) …

even if you only learn a little bit, it will have been worth your time :)

Yes don’t be put off all the above is simple and involve nothing more than nipping up with spanner or using long screwdriver / lever on ball joints .

For the hubs/swivels jack up under front spring and shake the wheel for play , all them checks less than 45mins
Save the garage for when it’s actually needed , have a look in the manual it’s very detailed

Ok had a look at all those checks, everything seems to be ok. Took it for a drive to see if I could work out what was happening, seems to be worse under load and I only went about 12 miles but burnt through nearly a quarter a tank of petrol?? Any ideas???

Not sure about petrol engines, does it start, rev at standstill smoothly.
Is the oil levels ok in gearboxes, swivels and axles
Does it make any difference driving in 4wd
There is ujs in front halfshafts
Perhaps put in low range , jack up one front corner and rock wheel back and forth see if noisy
Is the vibration like wheels out of balance or noisy knocking
What is play on steering wheel , all wheels on ground and rock the steering wheel until a wheel moves , should be no more than 2” at circumference

did anything happen that may have caused the recent shaking

Sorry not sure what yiu mean?

Back in post #5 I suggested that I thought you may have a problem with a UJ or the wieght falling off a propshaft.
Apart from a physical check to see if there is any movement in the hardy-spicers and looking for a 'clean bit' (as suggested) the best way to check is to remove the propshaft and drive apound with the transfer box locked.
First the rear and then the front.

Engine seems to be running ok, I’ll give your suggestions a go! Thanks!!

Great thanks! I’ll try that.

Magic . Let’s hope it stays like that

but if it doesn’t , try removing rear prop as above and run without , but check the ujs move smoothly by hand , I’ve had one before that totally dried up and was notchy but not exessively worn, this caused a knocking vibration , new ujs fitted sorted it,

possible the running just loosened it up a bit?
