Just had a week up Skye and highlands with a bit of nc 500 in my swb series, I was getting squeezed for space having to take a large dog cage so wanted to utilise the roof space without spending a lot.
I got some 18mm ply and made a top shelf in 3 parts all sitting on inside roof gutter
  • Front bulkhead shaped to roof
  • 2 shelves total depth 750mm these needed to be split to allow manuevering into place
The corners were chamfered and the width was approx 1390mm
It gives about 6” 150mm height , I packed up there 2 camping chairs, 2 self inflating mattresses , tent , groundsheet, with room for coats . Cost a fiver for some 2nd hand ply . The stuff packed in also kept it from ratting . Did not affect rear mirror and easily removed

I had previously made a roof console for radio in similar style

Simple and smart.

been thinking more and more about how to use that space. Currently using these...

To hook things to the inside gutter is simple. They work great, I've got cupboards and things in there at the moment The bottom is then pulled to the inside capping. Means I can remove everything with two wing bolts if I need too. Didn't think about a shelf, but that might be a good idea!!

Well it’s simple , I did think about limestone paint to match but it was a last minute mod and wanted undercoat dry lol. I did think of a cargo net I had lying round garage fixed to gutter bolts but thought it would sway around a bit , any pics of your cupboard set up ?

Will get some photos, I need to paint them. I had some lovely old metal lockers from when the car was a double cab and didn't want to loose them, so finding a hanging system was ideal. That way the car now has two modes.

I did some nets in my old setup, which was ok, but I had to use battens across the roof insides to stiffen them. In the end, I think a flat panel works well.

Another question, where did you driver roof console thing come from? I've got speakers to fit and I don't know where to put them. Was it something off the shelf or did you build it?

It was a home build, it’s cut to wedge in tightly, some 9mm ply with some 25mm square section to join the two bits into an L shape , covered in some padding and black leatherette material stapled on, I had the speakers from old stereo and got covers from Maplins, defender stereo radio cassette! From eBay along with some car interior lights prob best to go led now , ive just pulled it out to show the inside , the wires come down near the drivers side switch area where I picked up live feeds etc. These can be removed fairly quickly to alllow for roof off in summer.
