series steering damper?!

hi all, me and my wollowing IIA need some new track rod tubes, now as i am replacing them thought about fitting a steering damper, so my questions are,
are they any good?
is it worth it?
any advice or experiences, etc..

mine had a steering damper fitted when I got it, but the bushes where gone so it didn't really work, all it did was clonk and rattle

replaced the bushes, and its quieter but can't say i really noticed a difference in handling

The only experience I've had was when I took the knackered one off a disco I had and didn't replace it. Made no difference at all.

To fix your wallowing problem,first check all 6 ball joints are good[2 on track rod, 2 on steering rod,and 2 on steering box to relay rod.Check preload swival housings,[do as per manual] also check top housing pins [king pin]Check steering box for play on output arm It needs 2 people to do all this, one to waggle the steering wheel and one to observe the joints.damper on standard series just makes it heavier.

my steering rod and track rod aint looking to good, thanks for the tip, so any advice on new ones please,
heavy duty ones worth the money?

Standard rods ok for every day use, even general off roading. I have done lots of off roading for work and play in both series and 90s trashed a 90 trackrod or two but only ever put a slight bend in a series steering rod.Their position in front of the axle means they are not going to fail in compresion and the leaf springs themselves give some protection to the rods.

just to let you all know where i'm at -
well i bought new rods, decided that as i wasn't bothering with the damper i'd treat myself to heavy duty rods!! i changed them over, no more play through them but still play through the wheel, they have made a big difference to the driving but still got 5-8" of play in the steering wheel, where ever it is its not showing plain as day, been looking at every joint and just cant seem to see anything untoward, i'll investigate further! thanks for the help!

Check your steering box,have someone turn wheel from side to side while you observe the output arm at the back of the engine bay.If arm does not move in time with wheel then its worn some[very likley]box can be adjusted.Post again if you need more info.
