Series 3 Series slickshift

Has anybody fitted a Series slickshift? If so, what's your thoughts on it?

You might want to read a bit further down: "...improves gear change by reducing sloppiness and minimising travel, as well as neatening shifts giving smoother gear changes."
"Minimising travel" is a slightly unfortunate term though... does it mean that I, like 70% of all Land Rovers ever made, will never make it home, instead having to join the 30 remaining %s at the garage doors?

Looks nicely made, but surely the "uniqueness" (read dark ages) of the Series gear change is what's going on inside the box, I can't see a fancy gear lever (and it does look fancy) making much differnce to the 3 gear overun, back lash or, slow syncho.

That is my view! I drove a friends defender that had one fitted and hated it. Half to point of or a land rover is the long throw gear change, the slick shift makes it so there is no movement between gears and the box feels like it belongs in a tiny hatchback, although it doesn't change any of the other gearbox attributes (as mentioned above) so it still crunches and wines, and the shorter throw means you change gear quicker which the box cannot handle. The long throw gear change allows you to take your time on a gear change so the internals can catch up. Leave the land rover alone to be a land rover, if you want a short throw racing box, get a horrible modern plastic car!

Rant over, of course it is a personal thing. The 110 was my first car and I have always driven land rovers so to me it felt all wrong, my friend had grown up driving small hatchbacks so when he got the land rover it felt all wrong and he wanted it to be more like a small modern hatch back (I did warn him). I personally think there are many far better things to spend £180 on in an old landrover. If possible I would see if there is someone local to you who has one fitted and will let you have a test drive or speak to the company they might have a demonstrator. You may like it and think it is worht every penny, I hated it, but, I like my land rover to feel like a land rover, I also hate the lowered "fast road" variants as well. In my opinion A land rover should be old, muddy and trundling through the countryside with a hay bale in the back and a dog on the passenger seat!

Get a corsa and nail a series body to it.

Spill some ep90 in the footwell and leave a wet spaniel in it for a couple of days and it will be nearly there

I've read about these before. My personal conclusion was that whilst it takes some stick travel out of the shifts, the actual technology of the box (slow synchro) remains, so I'm not sure if it could potentially 'hurry' things and create additional internal wear.

The long throw big stick is an essential part of the charm for me, I would only consider something like the slick shift if I was trying to create a performance vehicle with a quicker engine and bigger brakes. It would be nice to try one though just to test.

It’s that’s rusty, oily mud smell. Difficulty to replicate.

I said nearly

but I know what you mean, there is something satisfying about it when you offer someone a lift and they get in and say "it smells like a land rover" with a smile of distant memories.

True. There’s always a huge grin on the passengers face when you go over bumps.

That said one person refused and called it a death trap. Their loss

My landrover is now equipped with a massive spider. If I leave it for a couple of weeks, there is a Hammer House of Horror type cobweb stretching from the windscreen to the the seat backs, it's very impressive. I try not to disturb the web on the passenger side when I get in. It's much betterer than any modern gadget cos it stops the wife going anywhere near it. In fact I think it would deter the average car thief.

I have one of those too. But he is only little and lives in the corner of the windscreen frame above the steering wheel. He doesn’t have much faith in the Vehicle though If it gets very bumpy you see him retreat back into his little corner web. But he does a good job of keeping the flies from distracting you in the summer.

I think spiders are a Series accessory, They even designed the steering with enough slack for you to bat the spider away without taking your hands of the wheel, a safety feature lacking on many modern vehicles.

Mine has a couple. Back window and on the wing mirror.

We've got jumping spiders here they look like microscopic trantulas they don't make webs but by Christ they're all over the 101 and there bite is as bad as a mozzie...

Well.

That’s another country to put on the list of no go zones for me. I’d be surrounding that 101 in a ring of fire to keep them away.

90/110's are even better home's for spiders.There is a nice plastic trim down the side of the screen for them to live behind.Reto fit trims in series for improved spider housing.
