Series III rear propshaft replacement?

My rear propshaft is officially knackered. The rear UJ has given up the ghost and also destroyed a couple of the bearing cups. Prior to this happening I was starting to get 'Clunks' when releasing the accelerator just prior to a gear change. I believe this can be an indication of problems with the sliding member?

How hard would it be to replace the whole propshaft myself? As far as I can tell it should just be a matter of unbolting both ends and dropping it out?

This would be my first major surgery as I have no previous experience apart from replacing the front floor panels.

(Hopefully the transfer box hasn't taken any damage!!!)
 
2 X Open ended 9/16th spanners and away you go, 4 nuts on Handbrake drum 4 Bolts on the Rear diff. You need to jack the Landy up aswell so you can turn the prop and get at all the bolts.

Don't think you need to change the prop though.. Just the U/J's. That "Clunk" was probably from the U/J not the sliding joint.
 
yeah , remove all bolts, but renew them as yer only use the nylocks once ;)
nock it to bits , using a socket in the vice to press the caps out after removing the circlips, and get a set of replacement UJ joints, the hardy spicers joints are a good make .
check the splines for any damage, if alls ok , rebuild , but make a few marks as to where the two shafts slide together , then yer back in the same place, tis an easy enough job,

Propshaft will have to go as the sockets that the UJ sits in have been damaged. I would post picures, but I've just moved and can't get them transferred off my phone at the mo'

yeah , scrap it, new shaft, complete, then a new set or nuts an bolts, paddocks are good fer them, jack one back wheel then yer can turn it to rotate the shaft, easier than pushing the landrover to move it half a turn, 9/16 spanners :)
