Series 3 Electronic distributor or not?

Hi, I’m nearly there with my Series 3 and will be MOTing soon.
When I had my previous S3 I always carried spare points, condenser and a dizzy cap. I was thinking of fitting an electronic dizzy to this one to avoid the road side repairs. Some are selling for £55 on eBay. Any thoughts makes to go for or avoid? As always your help and experience is appreciated.

I had one on my 2A at it was great - started straight up strongly, even when damp. Never faulted and never needed adjustment. I can’t remember what make it was though, unfortunately......sorry.

I changed my points for a sparkrite electronic ignition module, it cost about £30 or less. Dead easy to fit and it utilises the original dizzy. Makes starting and smooth running better. It's also supposed to improve mpg but I can't say I've noticed that. They seem pretty reliable but if you are the belt and braces type, they are cheap enough to carry a spare.

I am about to change my two and a quarter diesel for petrol and I know the 'new' engine has electronic ignition and a Weber carb, but it's not fitted yet so can't help with performance or reliability info.

Electronic ignition is a no brainer tbh. There are no advantages to running points that I'm aware of.

No real downside unless you want to keep it original. Points are fairly reliable unless you miss them during a service. Condensers 'can' fail but for the price you could replace as part of servicing also.
If you suffer from burnt contacts then either your not servicing often enough, or there is a bigger problem that needs addressing.
Electronic points won't give you a bigger or better spark, assuming what they replace have been serviced, but they do require little or no maintenance and as such, likely deliver a better spark if you are replacing dodgy points

Brilliant advice from you all, thank you. I’ll go for 2 sets of the electronic points modules. (One for spare). I do like original but it would be easy to convert back if I get the urge. Thank you.

Did you guys fit a new coil at the same time?

Remember they won't cure a worn dizzy...I fitted complete electronic dizzy to my 1975 101 easy install ...

It depends what coil you already have, it's something to do with impedance. I couldn't work out if I needed a new coil or not so in the end I bought a sparkrite coil as well, probably didn't need it but the instructions say the wrong coil can damage the module.

Good points above (no joke intended), I’ll go for complete new electronic dizzy as recommended. I’ll service the old one as a spare. That way it can always be slotted back in at ease if needed. There are some good videos on YouTube really simple swap out and coil type check explained.
