Hi, everyone out there is LandyZone. This is my first (and possibly last) post on this forum and I am desperate for some advice.

I have a Xreg freelander TD4 GS which I have had for a year (my last one needed a new transfer box and was traded in). I have been told that one of the fuel injectors has seized and the garage can't get it out. They have quoted £1500 to £2000 to fix this (worst case scenario, replacing engine top (?) and all four injectors). They have also offered me £200 for the car as is. Now, I know these cars are notoriously expensive to repair but this seems excessive and I would have thought the car was worth more than £200 even for scrap.

advice anyone?
 
Thanks for all your (honest!) advice. Not only did it make me laugh again but it made me feel part of a great community. I'm not sure where else to go but thanks to you all I am not giving up on my Freelander. And boy do I need it today - I am in North Norfolk and we have had our first really bad snow.........

Maybe too much of a trip for you, but JSF 4X4 in Norwich are in the "Good garage Fred" sticky post, jsf4x4/. Not used them myself though. Also, near the Suffolk/Norfolk border there's Mark Peacock Mark Peacock Land Rovers. Just had a leaking injector replaced by them for a dodgy hot-starting problem and fortunately it wasn't seized :)
 
Make sure your injector loom is ok first as it's a known problem & landrover have issued an upgraded part. Unfortunately the injectors can seize into the head but it sounds like your garage is more interested in conning you out of your car. You're right that it's worth a lot more than £200 as spares, people spend between £500-£1000 on knackered K-series models & your Td4 is worth more. Shouldn't realy be any change out of your grand & if you list it honestly on ebay I wouldn't be surprised to see a little more should you decide to get rid.
 
A few years ago, I had a faulty injector siezed in the head

First strip head externals
then smash plastic cam cover to reveal headbolts
(you have to remove the injectors to get the cam cover off so that you can get at the head bolts)
then send head off to have injector removed professionally
then the head is skimmed
then it has to be pressure tested (failure= £1100 for new head)
then replace any faulty injectors
then reassemble - with new gaskets and cam cover etc

Whole job with labour at a reputable Indipendant came to £1,800 :eek:
 
had same problem with my transit engine, asked 3 mates who are mechanics and they suggested head off and injector professionally removed. a m8 of a m8 who worked for rolls royce aircraft engines suggested spraying wd40 or the like around the injector and leave over night, then use a bodywork puller to extract the injector, cut a long story short, had to weld the puller bar to the injector and after about 6-8 good pulls the injector came out!!try first though and turn the injector if you can!!! my m8s were gobsmacked when i told them what i'd done. i have a freelander but not looked to see if this is feasible on these engines tho'.

Tried what you said first,

left it soaking in Penetrating oil for 3 days
heated it
tried a big arse slide hammer-puller

finally went the credit card route above :(
 
again, thanks for all the suggestions and help. I will get another quote and try again. If that fails, I'll get it on ebay.
 
is it broken - or just siezed, coz if it just siezed then the car should be driveable - shud it not?
One "dodgy" injector aint the end of the world, Shirley?

A mute Q - but why are the injectors being removed? I understand the problems with siezed injectors, but yu havent explained why it needs to be removed in the first place.
Can yu explain for what reason the garage feel it necessary to do this?
 
I managed to release mine by oscillating it within the clearance of the retaining studs using a hammer and aluminium drift on the flange 'ears'. I could not remove the studs as the minimal torque head extension sheared off. However tapping it back and forth eventually freed it suficiently to allow it to be extracted.
 
to the Mad Hat Man. I was told that the injector needed to be removed because the car would not pass it's mot because of emissions. Again, I am not an expert so you have to go on what people say. Yes, it's drivable although the original garage says it's 'in bits' and is going to take hours to put back together. Can they charge me for all this work even though they haven't fixed it?????????
