Disco 2 Second time's the charm (MoT!)

OK, so it's through the MoT for another year of motoring mayhem, but a couple of cautionary notes for you all - pay attention to detail!

I failed to check for blown bulbs, and had to replace a pair of blown bulbs: a number plate bulb, and the rear offside position bulb as well; in addition, I forgot one of the the cardinal rules of DIY: Tighten, check again, and tighten. The fuel filter, which went on so easily, should have been checked for tightness of fit about a week after I fitted it. The Examiner noted that there was a "fuel leak offside rear" Oops. Lessons learned!

Good cautionary tale. It's why the dreaded MOT is actually a 'sufferable' good thing!
One of the two Disco number plate bulb caught me out too!
There a similar rule like that 'measure twice cut once!' - me - I tend to have to get another piece!

Good thing? Only for those that don't check the simplest things before the test, lights, wipers/ washer, indicator and horn. The rest of us check ball joints, brakes, exhaust and all the other things that it on the examiners test list, and thats not aways necessary if you know your vehicle

Over the last year, we've (a mate of mine and I, he knows a LOT more than I ever will!) been over the wagon fairly extensively. However, I was the one doing the final checks in daylight before the MoT. One learns lessons, trust me

Yes a good thing! I agree with you. I like to think I do a thorough job too all year long but suggest that the greater majority (wrongfully) rely upon the MOT for their service checks.
For that alone at least there is a check of their vehicle once a year for the sake of everyone else.
For the conscientious it can still help to catch an oversight or even a light bulb on the way to a Test.

To a great degree, it's common sense, but given it's a Land Rover, I also try to go by the maintenance schedules noted in the Haynes manual (not that I do things the way that particular book says!); I've also got the workshop manual in PDF, and that's been invaluable a couple of times too. However, all of those, while very helpful, are not as valuable as the knowledge base of the membership here, which over the years, has helped immensely, both with my Siii, and now my Disco But, nothing helps like remembering to do the damn checks in the first place

One check that many people forget, even if they do all their own servicing is to grease the prop shafts, sliding joints and the U/Js.

Those're up again for three months time - last checked those in August
