This is advertised as a 1969 S2a. I thave an inkling that it's an S3. Can any of you very experienced chaps shed any light? Cheers

Can't see anything on it that says 2a, apart from the grille as already mentioned and don't forget that series 3 started in 1971. Also strange that even the wheel nuts are sprayed white.

That's what confused me as it's originally registered in 1969 (G plate) which would make it a late S2a. The asking price is 4.3k but needs a fair bit of work although the pics look decent it's full of filler and then hand roller painted. Rear Xmember needs replacing but rest of chassis is okay. What does anyone figure is reasonable price wise? I have no idea why the wheel nuts have been painted white? It's one of those that seems to be ringing alarm bells all over the place! Probably best avoided o_O

Looks dodgy, could be a later S3 on an S2A reg to get the tax exemption, there's a few about. If I see one on e-bay I report it. Sometimes they are clearly 90/110/Defenders so its not a tough judgement call. I don't think it could be an early S3 as its a year after my S2A, although that is mil so it could have been made after some civvy S3s? If its near I would have a close look at the dumb irons to see if there's a number and also at the engine no and rivets on the bulkhead plate. I can't see anyone fitting an S3 bulkhead, interior, bonnet, heater and wings to an S2A as its too much work.

Looks very close to my S3 but wouldn't like to sat definitively one way or the other.

I have previously mentioned that I thought all series 1 / 2 / 2a chassis were plated section and that series 3 were all C-sections welded top and bottom. I recall someone saying this isn't strictly true, was it LWB's are all plated section?? Anyway a look at the chassis rails might help give an answer.

Thanks Rob, all of this confirms my doubts about it. I've raised the issue with the seller who immediately became very defensive and admitted the S3 dash which then raises the question about his low mileage claims. Yes, it's a very old vehicle but a modicum of honesty wouldn't go amiss. The big gaps in the MOT history with comments such as "odometer not available" got me thinking. He kept harping on about MOT exemption next year as if it wasn't going to pass again but that was okay as it won't need one! Just drive 'round in an unroadworthy vehicle...be okay!? o_O

Dodgy as hell I would think. Roller painted over great gobs of filler? Wheels been painted including the wheel nuts. The price is very high for a lash up without the concern over its true identity. Run for your life mate...

I have mate! Cheers!

And I've just noticed the S3 door hinges. That is most definitly an S3. Now the only question is how did it change from an S2A made in 1969 and an S3 made some years later? They could have fitted an S3 body to an S2A chassis but my bet is the S2A bulkhead plate and numberplates went on an S3 which raises the question of where the S3 came from. Avoid!

yes to get round the pre 72 free road tax rule as was id think quite likely or

Agreed, appears dodgy.

I've been looking at prices for insuring mine. I found everything from 600 quid projects to 23 grand minters, all S3 swb models. Valuing landies is hard!
