We keep being asked about rust so I’m going to make a few threads, this being the first.

I use hydrate 80 on non severe stuff or steel you can get fairly clean and them just want to barrier. Perfect if your brushing back a chassis or panel that hasn’t been gone too far.

the next thread I do will be deox gel, which is more for the in depth rust removal.

Here is a commercial bulkhead panel I picked up at the weekend.

  1. Clean/degrease part. I use no nonsense degreaser on my car parts then dry
  2. Wire wheel the scabs and flakey rust.
  3. Clean again
  4. Paint one uniform coat of hydrate 80 on the surface
  5. Allow to dry for 30 mins
  6. Paint another coat but this time paint in perpendicularly to your first
  7. Let dry overnight
  8. You can then rough up surface slightly and apply your paint system

was that hydrate 80 again? Left some deox on the windscreen corners but ended up welding up my boot floor so hopefully I can clean and hydrate 80 before the rain comes!!

It's a generic rust convertor we cant get the brand names here....it's creamy white liquid that goes green when hits rusty metal then black when dry overpaint after 6hrs...when I get to the bits to be welded will use the gel to clean metal first hopefully next couple of days will take pics...will try and make them better as I'm working outside in full sun and reflection was a problem...
