getting ready to submit 1998 300tdi for MOT, the drivers side sill has varying stages of rust developed surrounding drainage holes and an especially large one, since i got stuck into it, at the point where the body joins the chassis outrigger before the rear wheel arch.
Is this an MOT fail?, with respect to it being structural, are the sills integral to cars rigidity given it has a chassis?

This seems to come up quite often :)

The rust has to be within 12 inches of a seat belt mount, suspension mount etc etc.

The front seat belts are just by the B-posts and the rear seat belts have mounts on the rear wheel arch.

Your call in the end, but I see no reason why not to get it patched......it's not going to get any better and sooner or later it will be an MOT failure. :)

your right,
thanks,
was hoping to rush it through an mot, but that would be logic defying given that i was taking the time to check under it.

wow!!
2 members in berkshire!! :)

mine has loads of rust, not as bad as some pics I've seen here though..
Getting it booked to sort out the rust on the rear wheel arches to stop mud coming in...and also because it's close to the rear seat belt mounts, altough MOT is only March 2010...

but now looking to buy a mig welder so I can do the rest of the work that eventually will need... also need to learn to weld!

My sills also have rust holes, the worst is on the drivers side at the front and passenger side at the back...
but been told I won't need a new sill, it can be patched..

nice...
got a mate coming over to teach me how to weld now, and patch up, mine are too close to front seatbelt.

James, yerself and i should get an outing sorted to one of the local pay n plays(i'm a member of 4x4 without a club, but never used membership) or if you know different, i'd be up for it, Rustie Rangies in Berks too, so he might wanna come.

Sounds good, let me know how you get on with your welding!

Best off getting some practice first, should not take too much get going, if you need some help let me know.

Just remove the sill completely and replace it with a length of 40mm by 80(100mm) 5mm box section - it wont rust and yu got builtin rock sliders.

no i believe, sounds like a really good way to go, the plating is gonna be tricky, and the sill is full of dry mud, and gonna be rusty elsewhere this time next year.
