Hi guys ... I know I've posted on this before and I keep thinking I've identified it but it's still there. Basically I keep getting a knocking / rumbling sound from under the car when slowing down or when there is no power going through the drive train. I have already changed the rear diff as that had a lot of play in it but it made no difference! Last week I found a slight wobble on the sliding joint of the front prop. I changed the prop today and although it seems much better there is still a kind of rumbling which seems to coincide with while I'm letting the clutch out slowly for engine braking. Can't see anything else amiss, A-frame ball joint has no movement when I get a crow bar on it so I'm at a loss now. Anybody had the same kind of thing? The noise is like very distant thunder claps if that makes sense. Any ideas again now it's getting narrowed down a little?
Cheers.

had the same problem and it turned out to be the handbrake shoes had a sticky grease built up on it and was sticking to the drum and making all the noise and driving me crazy:mad: . i just opened it up used a knife to scrape all the junk out and cleaned it very good with gasoline and the noise was gone

Now that is something I haven't thought of ... That's next weekend then. Many thanks, I'll let you know if that cures it. :)

Right, thanks guys, I'll do them in order of easiness I think so I'll start with a loose tin of sweets on the dash! :) ... It's passed its MOT last week and there was an advisory that said slight play in one front wheel bearing ... couldn't see that causing a noise like this ... it's more of a clunking than the sound a wheel bearing gives! Cheers for all the suggestions.

If it isn't a wheel bearing as advised... might be worth looking at the swivel preloads then;)

try it you may be suprised .. i know i was, never thought it would make such a problem

Don't be too upset if that's not the problem;) It's pretty hard to diagnose a problem with somebodies description on the internet without actually seein' it in the flesh;):D:D

Yeah I know and I guess there are so many noises from so many parts that it's just a case of elimination! Oh well, I'll get there ... naturally it will be the very last thing I come to! ... Thanks guys, plenty to go on there.

I think that being as the exact same noise is there but nowhere near as bad since I changed the front prop that I may also have a problem with the rear one too. This would also make sense as it coincided with me doing a 2" lift. Although the rear prop seems tight unlike the front that was loose at the sliding joint it may be that the UJ's are binding up. I don't think there is any way of checking this without fitting new UJ's so I think I may as well renew the whole shaft and be done with it. Will let you know ... if no good will try hand brake drum next. Cheers all.
