Rubber Donut failed (with pics)

Heard a bit of an unusual noise from under the Disco in the last couple of days so just had a quick peek and saw this





This donut has been on less than a year and not done many miles, I have HD suspension but this only lifts it by 1" so shouldn't affect it.


What could have caused this? and is it dangerous to drive 3 miles to work and back in the morning?

could you not take prop off and lock trans box. ie fwd ony cos if it totaly fails could be more damage

Wouldn't like to chance driving it. Is it really worth it?

I had same problem last week , but it was 15 years old. drove a few days with no rear prop and diff lock on . I had to replace the flange going into diff a pig of a job, as one of the 3 holes had enlarged, check condition of yours.

Any ideas what could have caused this?

I would get some old oil worked into those brackets on the axle where the radius arm fits on, stop them rusting and failing when you are on the move.

Don't buy one of the cheap parts for your replacement.
Buy the proper GKN kit, it's only a few quid more, but comes with central bushing as well.

The cheaper kits look the same, but are made from recycled flip flops.

I bought a middle of the road priced one, it lasted 2 months.
The GKN replacement has now been on two years.

Oh not another.... I had 2 go on me so in the end removed the flange and replaced with q 200tdi flange. Swapped the prop for a 200tdi and all is well. No more rubber donut. And also I can't tell the difference in vibration damping so therefore it was a waste of time on Land Rovers part

I've already ordered a replacement, don't know what brand but it comes with a 2 year guarantee so I guess it must be ok.

I think I'm going to do the same eventually, I'll start getting the parts together once I've sorted this mess out.
