Long story short i changed my autobox for a supposed low miles good secondhand one, now i have no 4th gear .. checked all the obvious bits oil level etc but torque converter is not locking up at over 55mph? infact i've had it up over a 100 and still no fourth just a load of revs! Any ideas for why converter not ocking up please

Well if it's not going into 4th gear then maybe the torque convertor is not going to lock up. Is it failing to get 4th or is the torque convertor failing to lock in 4th? I suggest you look at the selector adjustment as you have replaced the gearbox.

whilst we're on the subject of torque converters one of mine has a horrendous vibration at 2k plus in neutral it doesn't sound well at 1500 rpm
I suspect torque converter plate is broken do you concur
p3 4.6 gems

qiute possible ,id check before any damage to box occured

umm interesting, thanks chaps but now not sure if it's getting into 4th or not but revs at any given speed over 55 are higher than they should be even with foot off the gas so i assume it's not getting 4th? oil seems fine as i had to drain it to replace the kickdown cable. How is lockup actuated?

Is your kick down cable adjusted correctly, if it's too tight you could get this problem.

Thanks chaps, I couldn't find any info on how to set the kickdown cable, as far as i remember haynes simply said ensure it doesn't stop full throttle operation ... i turned the actuating cam round half a turn or so to connect new cable then just set it up so it has a tad of freeplay with throttle wide open. Any ideas how it's sposed to be set? everything else seems fine, gearchanges, kickdown etc just isn't locking at high speed and it's costing me a fortune to cruise at anything over 70

ok i managed to find the time to play with the rangie but to no effect ... grr tried cable nice n tight then slackened it off a few times til there was plenty of slack in kickdown but unfortunately to no effect. Any other ideas would be much appriciated :)

Yeh springs back well, feels lovely and smooth like a new cable should. I guess they are all like it but feeling for the stop on pulling the cable there is a positive 'stop point' but then if you pull a little harder the cable will pull out another 10mm or so, I even had a look at mrs rustys one to see what hers is like and seems the same, well except hers works properly:eek:
