Has anybody heard about a possible rolling m.o.t like tax exemption, heard one or two whispers about it of late and it seems like the powers that be are'nt sure how to work it

"tax isn't rolling ,,,its for vehicles 1973 and older i think"
sorry, that's no longer the case. For about four or five years now, once your vehicle reaches 40 years old, it becomes tax exempt. But you have to apply - it isn't automatic. My 1974 88" has enjoyed free tax for three years now.

tax is rolling, its 1977 now i think, but my question was about m.o.t exemption being rolling as well, if you google it, it comes up with different idea's that the government are proposing, just wondered if anybody could decipher it

Currently vehicles are exempt from VED when they are 40 years old & it's a rolling date.
As for MOT the exemption is currently for vehicles manufactured prior to 1st January 1960 but there are further proposals in the pipe-line as the UK has to conform to European rules until such time as we actually leave the EU.

Just taxed my 74 Jensen-Healey yesterday for the princely sum of £0
You need to ask DVLA to change the class of vehicle from PLG to Historic, which you can do after 40 years. Then your reminders will be zero rated.

There is talk of rolling MOTs and I believe a white paper has been approved but nothing has happened yet

Some European countries (ie Germany) give 'historic' status to 30 year old vehicles & this has been suggested here in the UK, though that in itself doesn't necessarily mean MOT exemption. It's a case of watch this space o_O

My 2a has just passed it's last mot. But i'm thinking that I should get a expert to give the old girl a yearly safety check.
What is everyone else thinking of doing? I would have thought that the insurance company may want something.

I'll have my local landy garage ( family independent) give it the once over each year, just not bothering to pay for a bit of paper. 7 years to go till I'm tax free...

If the UK follows Germany & adopts Classic status at 30year which may mean mot exemption my RRC will qualify, but I'll still get the local garage to give it the once-over occasionally.

I have a 41 year old car tucked up in the garage so in May 2018 when the "classic" non mot status starts for 40 year olds it will be out on the road, only the old weekend when the sun is shining that is, and exempt from mot and tax... Great no more time off to go to a garage with this vehicle ever. :)
Will still have to pay for both for the disco, but only tax at the moment for my Jag which also is in the garage now there's salt on the roads. :D
