Now I have my disco 2 for road / off road work and a little playing in mud and having an addictive nature I am now thinking of building the project vehicle with my son that I have always wanted, a rock crawling landy, yes I love playing in mud like the next human but I do love rocks and lumpy places too, I did a little when I had a suzuki 410 back in the mid 2000's but that was a £50 toy which lasted six months.

What do you think the best base vehicle would be and which engine / gearbox would you use?

For serious rock crawling you want to be going very slow.
If you want to stay landrover, Def or Disco will be more than adequate. Ashcroft make a thing called an underdrive, slower than low box. Ideal for rock crawling.
Also, some kind of locking axles will come in handy. You will find one or more wheels will often be in the air!:)
