Series 3 Roamer Overdrive?

So, I am new to land rovers. I asked a question on another thread bout the extra gear knob with a big "R" on it and someone has suggested its a Roamer Overdrive.

Can anyone confirm this is what I have? Also, How do I use it? Sorry for the dumb questions.

Thanks, I understand what they do, just trying to confirm this is what I have and how to use it? Do you depress the clutch and engage it?

I'm no expert but overdrives normally work on 3rd and 4th. i.e an extra gear between 3rd and 4th and an extra gear when in 4th to decrease revs when cruising. Go out and have a play!

ive got one , yes you need to use clutch, ive used mine at 35mph on level ground so its not straining,cracking kit,

i got a cheap rev counter from ebay and in forth gear it dropped 400 revs

Can you still buy these roamer drives and how much please

hey series2steve, can you confirm your knob looks the same?just making sure this is what I have

Well, if you take the cover plate off under the center seat, you should be able to see the overdrive unit on the back of the gearbox - (which is sort of why I linked the roamerdrive site)

IF it is an overdrive, there is a mass of info on the roamerdrive site, most of it downloadable in "pdf" format.

If you haven't done so, search for and download the series manuals - they are free and fabulous..... well worth a read

no my knob aint like that. they cost over £1600 on ebay

My Roamerdrive knob is different to that. It may just be a knob of some sort of other overdrive of another type of car.

Even if the knob is from a roamerdrive (which as far as I know it isn't), surely the only sensible course is to have a look at the unit.

Did the previous owner's name begin with 'R' y any chance?

I'm going to have a dig and see what the knob is connected to LOL

After the car was at my mechanic who knows all about Landy's, it turns out to be a Fairey Overdrive

The UK distributor has changed. Rocky Mountain in the UK is apparently winding up - there were some mutterings about the recent change in exchange rates making things not so advantageous. I believe you can now get them via BritPart...

...at least I think it was BritPart (so much stuff drifts through my head these days I can barely keep up with it all!)

I was checking my options for an overdrive, Fairey or roamerdrive. Got a price for a new roamerdrive trough Britpart. 2117 euro's!! (1827 pounds) Wow. But then again, better expensive then not for sale.

For me there comes a point when even if it is for sale I won't be paying that much!

(I got a feeling you might have just bought an entire Land Rover for a similar amount)

Other solutions such as the Ashcroft transfer box regear or a second hand Fairey or even monster truck tyres (!) seem to me to be more reasonable...

Paid a little more for the 88 but not much . And indeed, at these prices it's just not worth it. I'll wait for a second hand Fairey at a reasonable price, although that getting rare, a Fairey overdrive for a reasonable price. Until then I'll drive a little slower.

Only bought my Roamerdrive last year. I'm sure I didn't pay more than £1300,which I thought was pricey but I had wanted one for ages. Yes, the exchange rates have changed but I wonder if Britpart are trying to shove one up us.

I used it today and it was bloody awesome!
