I have a discovery 300tdi auto.. Just had the alternator re conditioned as it was draining the battery over night.. re fitted everything and all is working fine except the rev counter, that doesnt work.. I have also changed a few bulbs in the instrument panel so checked all the wires and everything is connected as it should be...

I can make the rev counter work if i disconnect one of the 2 multi plugs located at either end of the instrument panel (works regardless of which one I disconnect) and stops working when I re connect the multi plug.. Also maybe totally un related but when i disconnected one of the plugs the radio (after market radio/dvd player) decides to switch off, on, off on, untill the plug is re connected then that works fine..

Totally confused by this.. Could the fault lie with the alternator?

Thanks
Shaun

sound more like a short somewhere in the instrument binnacle. did you connect the revcounter wire to the correct terminal. Is it shorting on the alternator body?

Yea its connected correctly, on the alternator to the single spade connector.. Would a short on the alternator body stop this working? the recon carries a 12 month warranty so can return it if the fault lies there.. maybe I disturbed something changing the bulbs but have double checked all that.. just confusing how it works when i disconnect one of the plugs.. everything on the panel is working fine, all guages and lights fully functional...

Stll cant figure this out.. Taken the clocks out to replace some bulbs, reconnected everything properly, Everything in the panel works, apart from the rev counter.. Can get it to work by disconnecting one or both of the large multiplugs on the ends.. Re checked the connection at the alternator end.. Cant figure it out...

I'd take the alternator back off and check the connector on it .. not just the connection. Just wondering if it's been knocked and is earthing/shorting itself out on the alty body ..

Yeah I'LL try that.. thanks.. would that cause it to not work but then work when i disconnect the multi plugs on the clocks?

could be as simple as a dodgy earth, mine does work sometimes when it wants to, quite funny sometimes i'll put the indicators on and it'll bounce to the ticking and when their off it'll just die again.

Just one more little thing that doesnt work but hey she still drives fine...

Good Luck
Will watch thread
On mine there was a connector at the alternator that converted the screw thread to a spade connector .It looks solid but the 90 deg bend was covered in black plastic .When i tested this for continuity there was none ??
Made new connection and it worked for a couple of months ,Now it has started being erratic and am thinking it may be shorting to earth at the alternator now.

Thanks for the pointer Lee 90 I'll have a look.
I have tried putting a new wire between the Alt but dont know which connections it uses in the instrument cluster.
Any chance of checking with a multimeter that there is a signal coming from the Alt ?
