just fitted new engine into 300tdi 95 dicovery and all works sweet except speedo and rev counter any ideas

The rev counter works off a thin (white I think) wire on the back of the alternator, have you checked the connection?
Did it have a 300TDi in it before?

like for like replacement regaurding engine all wires seem ok conected to back of alternator

The sence wire to the alternator is only for the signal to the tacho gauge but as both gauges are out check the multi pin plugs in the binnacal.
You may not be getting power to the gauges, the fuse is F14 (passenger compartmet fuse box) is the fuse to both gauges and the vehicle speed sensor mounted on the transfer box so check your connections there.
