If I replace my engine with a re manufactured unit is it possible or legal to reset the mileage on the car ?

Does that mean it is legal to do it but the certificate would have to state the mileage was reset to 0 when the car was on XXXXXXXXXX and had a rebuilt engine fitted ?

It's not actually illegal to turn a mileage back. After all If you need to change the speedo in most cars will reset the mileage back to Zero. Is the P38 mileage data held in the dash or the BECM?

But if you declare the mileage as correct after it's been altered when you sell the car then it gets a bit sticky.

It will also flag up on any HPI type check so potentialy put a buyer off as the car does not look so genuine.

It has the facility in Nanocom to change mileage but if I read it correctly only on an unlocked BECM

Unless they have changed that was the rules a few years ago when I was in the trade, if we sold a car after a speedo change we would usually sticker the Service book, and any receipts. and sales invoices to customers had to state the mileage was not correct due to ?????

When you buy a new speedo you have to register the miles that the current speedo is showing and you will be given things one a new certificate saying new speedo fitted on…… and a sticker with the old miles on presumably to stick on your new speedo

I thought the BECM would always default to the highest mileage shown?

If you swap then instrument cluster or becm it will store whichever now has the highest value. So swapping to a different cluster with higher mileage it will change the value in the becm to be that.

My wifes old mondeo mk 2 got jamed it the 50k s it climbed up as normal but when reached 59999 it went to 50000 again
Did this for about 5years before we sold it
In the listing i didnt lie about it though i said milage showing 56900 !which it did! Probably about the 5th time is had been there though

I've never worried too much about mileage - how the vehicle has been used and maintained is more important IMHO. Current P38 now over 190K (replacement engine at 97K), but seems to have been well looked after and wanted for nothing. I think you only need to worry if you're paying a high price for a nearly new motor with low miles. The lowest mileage I think I've ever purchased was the Discovery at 59K for £1995 :)

HOW to change mileage on a P38.

P38 Range Rover Mileage correction

Hello any one here ever changed mileage on a Range Rover 1999 4.6 if so please give a brief explanation if possible.

1 Remove dash from car.
2.Open dash and remove all internal connectors and pcb from dash.
3.You will see one BIG eeprom 28C16 i think it was NEC or something like that.
4.Desolder eeprom and solder eeprom socket on it's place.
5.Read eeprom and you will see that milleage is verry simple to change. It is not coded or secured.
6.After changing eeprom information DO NOT PUT back in dash.
7.Assemble dash and put in car.
8.Give car in ignition and wait about 20 seconds then swich ignition OFF.
9.Remove dash from car and then put chip inside.
10.Put dash in car and then give ignition ON and new milleage must be on display.

What is an eeprom.? I was told by the garage my dash didn't work. I got another 2nd hand. but it added 100000 to speedo. not good, especially insurance disqualifed my annual 7000. Any tips on eeproms and adjust my speedo to original mileage on P38.

An EEPROM is an Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory chip.
Like you used to get in BBC Micro's with pirated copies of top-selling software packages written to them.

If its a genuine reason, I.E you have to replace the cluster and can only find 1 with a higher mileage.

I know it can be down, but it needs proper kit or I believe a mix and match if certain bits from original cluster transposed to the new.

Is that a question or instructions?

As far as I know it defaults to the higher of the dash or BECM which can be a shock if new dash was km. I think a Faultmate might be able to set the correct mileage but never had a chance to play with one and they're VIN locked so it won't help unless you buy one. I am guessing the dealer might be able to do it with Testbook.
