Can anyone tell us if these costs for a repair are reasonable? Recently took our Disco 4 in for new brakepads and to repair passenger door lock that was not unlocking automatically. The garage changed and charged for the pad replacement but asked us to bring it back for a new doorlock when they got the part. Took it back yesterday and they changed the lock. The bill yesterday for fixing the lock was: £60 to confirm the fault, £90 labour and £97.49 for the new part. add in VAT and the total was £297.47. Is that reasonable? At the same time they processed a recall on something to do with the crankshaft monitoring which didn't incur a charge - though presumably they must have hooked the car up to a computer to check that was working. Does that seem like a reasonable bill? (oh, and they washed the car for free while they were on).

I can only go by the prices for a similar job on the D2.
Assuming that the labour charge is £60/hour, a not unheard of price these days, that's an hour to confirm your diagnosis and do their own. Changing the door lock on the D2 requires that the door is virtually stripped completely; trims off, window out, window frame out, the lot. That's just to get at the lock, then after changing it that's all got to be put back. 1 1/2 hours might be a little excessive, but not much, don't forget that in most places labour is charged for each half hour or part thereof, so 1 hours and five minutes gets charged as 1 1/2 hours.
£97 odd for the part is about right, I'd say. They're about those prices for the D2. Then of course there's the government rip-off tax, VAT. Just be thankful we no longer have to pay the old purchase tax, that ran out at 33.3%.
Welcome to the world of Land Rover ownership.

OK,

Well assuming they did not charge you for the diagnostics on the door issue when you had the brakes done.
Plus, not knowing their hourly rate , which could be a shocker, I would be interested to know what it is.
It could well be a normal price to fix this issue.
The price for the door actuator seems reasonable, if you have the part number there it is easy to check the cost against other suppliers.

On here we normally shy away from going to a garage if at all possible, so we tend to get parts and change them ourselves. But , then our landies also tend to be slightly older and preloved by a few owners. Thus when we see garage prices we have a heart attack.....:D

Cheers

Wow - and thank you for the thoughtful reply.
That makes a strange sort of sense. I suppose its reasonable to take such a long time if its a difficult part to change. But one hour and £60 to agree that the lock wasn't working? Perhaps they are rounding each task up to the nearest hour?
Whatever, sounds like its the going rate. Think I will take it to the Independent garage that does work on our Defender next time.
Cheers

Looks like you are right there, sounds like thats the going rate. Makes me think though - it is a lot of money so I don't have to lean over and open the door using the handle!

As a ramble: While I was waiting to pick the car up I could hear one of the salesmen talking to a buyer about all the new extra features he could have on a new Jag he was buying. Endless list of heated this and automatic that to do stuff I didn't even know you could do - much less want. Presumably all that goes wrong from time to time......

Thing is, the Disco is a great motor and is a luxurious drive and we're lucky to have one. AND when I get in my Defender 300 Tdi its noisy and not very fast and....

BUT the Defender makes me smile every time I turn the ignition in a way the Disco never does when I press the Start button.

Think I'm coming round to the idea: "keep it analogue".

Sadly, it'll all go wrong at some point - and the more complex it is, the more its gonna cost to fix - sometimes, they just cannot be fixed.

IMHO, Its the future ! - We've had all manner of new fancy "vehicles", and they have all failed, sometimes very badly ( like £14K for an MOT *) - and we both now have D1's. The 300Tdi might not be the fastest thing known to man, but its very tunable, VERY reliable, and pretty practical too. We're keeping them forever.

Can i ask what they charged for changing the discs and pads please?

* - £14k was clearly a bit uneconomic, but that was the price, so "it" got sold.

Well, the brake pads adventure cost us: Labour £90, rear brake pads £62.50, Wire Brake pad £10.70. The VAT 32.64. So grand total: £195.84. Didn't change the discs (thank goodness).

Could have saved yourself over £100 if you learned how to fix it yourself.
Brake pads must be one of the easier jobs to do. There are plenty of write ups on the Internet detailing how to do it.
If you are going to pay labour charges for every repair on your vehicle, it will turn out rather expensive

You dont say where in the UK you are.............around here a main dealer can charge as much as £175 per hour (London )

Thanks for the info. Scary money for such a simple job!! just for reference, rear discs for a D1 are about £12 each, pads about £7 for a set, and the retaining clips less than £2.

"analogue" is the way !

I'm suprised the main dealer is only £90/hr - most have been over £100 for a long time. Their overheads are enormous. And its pointless quoting internet prices comparing D1 or D2 parts almost without fail D3/4 parts are more expensive.Plus they will be genuine parts from the dealer. You have to compare apples with apples,a D4 is not cheap to buy or run, anyone that thinks they are is deluded.

quite agree , i know if i wasn't able to do the work myself it would end up unviable to own a land rover

£90 labour for rear pads, same for rear door latch, seems reasonable to assume thats an hour in each case ?
