My wife has put petrol in the tank of our diesel td5. We have had no luck in syphoning or pumping fuel out - presumably because of some anti theft device in the tank stopping the hose reaching the fuel.

The car is parked nose up on our drive. Any ideas for an easy way to drain the tank.

how much petrol she put in?How much diesel was in there already?Has the engine been run since this happened?

She has run the car and there wasn't a lot of diesel in it. The problem now is removing the petrol so I can get it to the nearest garage ( hoping it will start when diesel is put in it.

Thanks

Then the fuel pump has already run with reduced lubrication. You could try to "dilute" the petrol in the tank by filling it uip with diesel but that depends how much petrol was put in.

According to the manual the fuel tank is resin with no drain plug. Mores the pity.

Disconnecting the fuel line seems a good idea, but in the mean time I have found someone who will tow it from the drive and far enough down the road so we can call the AA to take it on to the garage we use. (mainly because it s cheap).

Thanks for the replies.

the engine will run with a diesel poetrol mix without major issues, but thats dependant on the petrol diesel mix ratio.Hope it isnt too bad for ya.

I added petrol so could not blame wife. Shell told me more than 2% petrol was fatal to engine. I removed the offending material by disconnecting the outlet pipe at the fuel filter, fitted a temporary line to a drum and by turned on the ignition switch without turning the engine. Repeat this until the tank is empty. Since the pump runs for about 20 secs per cycle it can take time to drain the tank but it works a treat.

We removed the screw-cap fron under the fuel filter and drained as much as we could using the ignition. We would probably have removed more by removing the fuel line as described above. Put some diesel in from a plastic fuel can and that got us to a petrol station where put in a lot more diesel, that got us to the garage. Hopefully after purging the system and replacing fuel filters it will all work alright.

There won't be a next time, but I would now know about disconnecting pipe and running fuel pump by means of ignition.

Once again thanks for the help.

If you get underneath, you should be able to get at the sediment trap on the rear chassis rail. You can then disconnect a pipe, extend it and get a syphon going. The other option is go in under the rear carpet and get at the hatch for the fuel tank sender. You could probably get the sender out and syphon direct out of the tank.

This is wot the Swiss mech did when I put petrol in my Freelander and it stalled at the top of an Alp. Just used the pump to push it all through. No damage, although it had run for half an hour including climbing the mountain. probably running on about 50-50 mix. is how I felt.

when i filled my 200 tdi with some water contaminated diesel a while back i lifted the boot carpet up and removed the cover to gain access to the fuel level sensor . removed that in 5 mins and dropped pipe in the tank and syphoned it all out . quick and easy :)
