Are you performing the D2 unlock dance before you finish with a flourish and assume the Unlock Stance whilst pressing the unlock button????
This ensures the maximum effect from pressing the button.

I get this problem quite often. I thought the fob battery was dying, then 15 ft away, it works fine. This can happen with any fob. We cannot work out what the problem is. Rf is new, Bcu's are rebuilt, keyfobs are perfect. If anyone can find the reason, please let me know.
 
IMO it's not a hardware issue , it's about the carrier signal's modulation on the unlock command, it's a common symptom in RF applications as the same carrier signal(433MHz in this case) to have different ranges according to the modulation
