Remote fob

I have just purchased a Freelander 1 and it only came with 1 key and remote fob. The previous owner gave me a blank key that he never had cut, can I just take that to any key cutter and will they cut it for me or is it a waste of time.

Also where do I get a 2nd remote fob. Can I get a universal unit and program it or do I need to go to my local Landrover dealer and get an official remote fob?

Does anyone know how much these cost?

Pending how old your freelander whether it worth going to Land Rover dealership. The key itself will have a chip inside to marry to the ignition sensor, so your spare key will need a chip to also marry with ignition. There is a cheat around by having the original key stuck near to the ignition sensor and use the cut key. Depending age I would check every door locking work okay first the tailgate is different as the chip only raises the rear window but the fob unlocks and lowers the rear window.
