For all you power mad people out there, I thought I would post my thoughts on my highly tuned TD4 auto.

Okay, it was only for an hour.......


As some will be aware I had a Ronbox fitted for a while, but I recently had a remap and I'm selling the Ronbox (- buyer lined up).

Some of you may be aware that Energy tuning state that you can use a remap and a Ronbox together.

Well, seeing as I had both, it seemed rather silly not to......

The results were amazing.

Now I can't comment on fuel economy, but for around the same amount of power, around 165-170bhp you get from a v6, you will get much better fuel consumption, I'm sure of that.

As for driving.....wow!

The Ronbox was on no5, as I have a Bosch MAF.

You notice it as soon as you touch the accelerator, you can tell there is a lot more power there low down.

I decided to do some comparison runs, 0-60mph. I found a quite road where I could accelerate safely up to the speed limit.

The auto will not rev higher than about 1200rpm when in gear (sport) with left foot on the brake and right foot buried in the carpet.

I then took my foot off the brake. I used BMW M Power app on my phone to record the figures. Now when new, the TD4 auto would do 0-60mph in about 15 seconds.

With the remap and the Ronbox switched off, the 0-60 time was about the same, disappointed I must say, but I didn't try it before the remap, so have no comparison there, other than it is definitely faster and has more torque than standard.


With the Ronbox on, the 0-60 sprint took 3.5 seconds off the time. It felt much quicker.

In general driving using D, it would hang on to 4th gear going up some seriously steep hills at 30mph, where before, with or without the remap it would change down to 3rd.

So, if you want the maximum power you can get from a TD4, then a remap AND a Ronbox is they way forward, but don't forget to inform your insurers :D

Now please note, these are all for my auto with 123,600 miles, which as standard is about 3 seconds slower in the 0-60 sprint than a manual.

My auto has silicon hoses, EGR bypass, BMW cyclone and a Pipercross airfilter along with a 40mm lift which makes it less aerodynamic.

In time I will try some more 0-60 times with the remap, as I am not used to doing this, so see if I can better the factory figures.

Think it would be a lot better on a manual...........no good on mine with BFG tyres, and 50mm lift lol :D
 
I had another chance today to try my remap, and much happier with the result. 14.1 seconds. Still slow, but to be expected, but faster than a standard auto and 2 seconds slower than my one attempt with the Ronbox fitted.
 
Can anyone tell me anything about ecu / replacement or remaps. I've seen an Australian product which boosts power, economy ... but its very expensive - if it's still available.

52mm throttle body, VVC plenum chamber, enclosed induction kit, 4 branch manifold, sports cat, stainless steel exhaust, high lift cams, hi flow head, and a stand alone ecu (re-mapped). And you should see a healthy 180-190 bhp with a nice increase in torque.......not sure about economy though lol......or price! But would be cool. :D

Oh, and a multi layer head gasket. ;)
 
Just come across this thread, very interesting indeed as I do feel like I need more power lol. My understanding of a remap is the tuner making the absolute best they can out of the performance of the engine and then dial it back slightly so the injectors aren't running 100% duty cycle and the EGT's aren't getting close to dangerous melting levels.
 
How much was the remap Epic? And where did you get it done?

Hi all, thought I would share my experience with my TD4 Manual. 3 door.

TDI-Tuning.co.uk Tuning Box, EGR Bypass, Silicon Hoses, Decat, Low Profile Exhaust tail box, BMW Cyclone filter, Piper Cross Air filter.
Radical improvement in 0-60, was about 13.5 standard, tested on a dry flat road and got, average of 10! Best was 9.8!

Revs freely up to 4,000, before felt strained above 3,000, biggest difference is torque, pulls very strongly now from 1,500, and very responsive.
Mpg, avg 34.6 - best 42.6 Scotland run over 1,200 miles.
So overall better.
Have updated front discs, and replaced Front lower wishbones, arb links, arb bushes (poly)
Track rods, all got a good bashing when green laning!!
Next - 16inch Alloys with 225/55 Tyres to keep it the road!!
And Face Lift Seats, to keep me in place! (Way more support and comfort!!)

Not for an hours use. It was to see if I could live with it. My insurer will go to 25%. Not nearer 50% increase.

My remap was £250 from Terrain Vehicles in Bexhill on Sea.

My insurer is aware of all my mods, and it costs the same as Direct Line would have charged me when I upped the spec of theirs to match my policy, but Direct Line wouldn't insure a modified car or for me to use off road, which Adrian Flux does.
