Hello All, as we all know mostly only people with problems put items on the forum.
As I have just replaced my 1996 disco1 after 9 years without a single breakdown, spent a good bit on maintenance etc, I now have a 2002 Disco 2 and would like to hear from all who can say that their Disco 2 has done good mileages without breaking down. My new car has been serviced ok and all in the book, checked all the old MOT,s and work required seems to have been done.
Just asking how many out there have cars with an excellent history.Only changed because I took a notion to change. Have I done the right thing? Only time will tell.

look forward to your replies.

Thank you

Hello Jim, well to answer your question - we have now sold our TDi 300 110 and are searching all day every day for a good Disco TD5.

I've had a few before and found that so long as you take a pro-active maintenance approach with them, they are perfectly reliable.

I've had my D2 Td5 for about 2.5 years now and have done about 30k in it. When I bought it, it was a 3 owner vehicle (last owner disabled) with FSH. So the kind of vehicle that you'd be pretty happy buying - especially as the cylinderhead had just been replaced at great expense.

It needed work, and a lot of it, in the first few month of ownership. To be honest I very quickly started having doubts about whether I'd bought a lemon, but I persevered and after the first 3 months of ownership I'd done pretty much everything that usually affects a D2. At that point it'd cost me around £1k over what I'd paid for it, and that was just parts.

Since then its been mods and routine maintenance only. The D2 is rock solid reliable and barring a hiccup last week with a battery drain (that may be down to a witness camera that I hardwired) I have no worries or complaints. The key is to keep on top of the maintenance and address anything that needs attention asap.

Sorry for the long answer, but in summary, after doing all the work that had been skipped on by previous owners, the D2 has been pretty much faultless. You'll need a diagnostics unit if you haven't got one - I prefer the Hawkeye but many swear by the Nanocom. A D2 will cost you more to maintain than a D1, make no mistake, but they're good truck.

i'm with thebiglad here... the better you take care of it the more reliable it will be... make some research and rule out the common issues and it will be nice

Thanks for the replies. My Disco 1 was serviced by the book, which kept it right.
My own garage guy told me to keep it but,, just felt like a change.
Intend to start with a full, every oil etc, service.
As an aside, i emailed the garage who did the last 4 services and the last 4. MOT,s for some background and got a one line answer with no signature
" If you want the info you will have to pay"

Some answer
Thanks again and no doubt I will be on with questions

Bought mine in 2008 at 51,000 now at 80,000 I keep well on top with pro-active maintenance, never let me down although I still have a problem with a water leak so keep a cover on it when the vehicle is not being used.
My D2 is a bit of a "hobby car" really and is used to tow my caravan in the summer.

We've had ours for 4 years, cover 15000 miles a year with some heavy towing thrown in.

As above, get all the jobs sorted out first and keep on top of maintenance and servicing, be proactive and see jobs coming.

Keep an eye out for good used spares on ebay, we've got two D2's in the family and have built up a decent stock of major assemblies on the shelf.

Also, be aware of jobs that cost a lot at a dealer that you can do yourself with a Hawkeye or Nanocom unit.

had mine just over 3 years. and just like the guys above, carry out proactive maintenance.
never left me stranded-yet. but has had a few of the common problems..
i.e. ignition lock-repaired,. wiper motor-replaced, air bags-replaced, compressor-repaired, chassis rust holes-bought a welder, fuel pump sender unit-repaired, various water leaks through the sun roof-silicone.
bought a hawkeye, which has been helpful for me and a few other forum members.
got my fingers crossed re the head.

Just an update folks.
I asked the garage referred to in previous post how much it would cost for the service info. Was told £50.+VAT.
Answer= Thanks but no thanks. Funnily enough i checked the air filter element which is spotless and the date 13/07/13 written on it.
Anyway , will put car in for a complete Big service and start from scratch.
Is charging for this info normal in the garage trade?

no doubt will be on with more queries as time passes.

Thanks so far

From what I've read on the D2's it seems prudent to change the oil pump bolt. Apparently they work loose over time and drop out. LR issued a new part with appropriate locktite.

Is there a certain engine number from which forward was the problem was resolved?
Also from which number was the plastic dowels on the head fixed?
Trying to isolate possible problems.
Thanks

Hi Jim, re the plastic head dowels, if it's not gone or replaced by now there's no problem.

Re the the oil pump bolt: this can have catastrophic effects so if you have no paperwork or proof that it's been done, just put a new one in. It's not a big job especially whilst doing an oil change - the new loctited bolt costs a couple of quid - just make sure if someone is doing it for you, that they KNOW they must lift up the chassis to gain working room to remove the sump.

Cheers
Dave

PS Still looking for my next TD5 - the rear chassis rust is becoming the single biggest issue now.

never hurts to double check things as Dave sais but as yours is a 2002 MY i suppose it has a 15P engine which never had this oil pump bolt problem.

Thanks again for the quick replies.
engine no is a 16P047**A

Car has 100K on the readout.
Fingers crossed this will be OK

Great help lads.

Hi Jim, that was one of the last TD5 engines made, so if the factory hadn't sorted out the oilpump sprocket bolt by then, there's no hope for us all !!!!

Dave

Mine had
Gearbox failure
Flywheel
Head gasket failure
Fuel pressure regulator
Injector harness (twice)
Coolant pipes failing
Fuel return line failed (twice @ £150 each)
Ace failed
Air bags failed
Ride height sensors failed (cheap plastic)
Rust on rear chassis
Leaking water in cab
Faulty electrics (from water ingress)
Leaky seals on gear box & transfer box
Air con failure (pipes corroded)
Leaking power steering box
Worn steering bracket
Wheel bearing
ABS sensor

These are some of the things that I can remember went on my td5 from 64,000 to 172,000 when I got rid. But I love it to bits, awesome vehicle, as long as your open minded.

but how old was it ?

Mine was 5 years old when bought & owned for 6. It was a facelift 2002 (52)
Oh and by the way mine had the plastic dowels in the head. I was confused as to why this was, & was told by the garage you get whatever engine is on the shelf at land rover at the time. The changing of the dowels associated with engine numbers & year of assembly is a mith. He said he's seen 2004 td5s models with failed head gaskets in his workshop which also had plastic dowels. (You get whatever is on the shelf)
