hi all, we've had a 300tdi defender on the farm for about 10 years but it's never been registered, we bought it from a quarry. Is it a simple process to register it? We only have the VIN number, our local landy parts place looked it up and it came up as a 1996 but that's all the info we have. It hasn't been modified in any way.
Cheers

If I remember correctly, when I imported my 90 from the Falklands, I had to insure it and MOT it using the chassis no., and then get it registered with the DVLA to get a log book.
My local DVLA office were a great help, but most of them seem to have closed
If you can have a word with them they will tell you exactly what you need to do
Hope this helps

Ring the Swansea number and hopefully you will talk to a nice lady with a Welsh accent that will help you.

i've just done this.

You'll need to insure it and MOT it on the VIN number, Phone the DVLA and get a V55 form for new registration. You'll also need a certificate from the land rover heritage centre proving it's age. Can't remember the cost (around £25 i think), I did it through their website. You get all this including proof of ownership, which might just been photos and documents referencing the fact you've had it for a few years. Send it all off, and then keep resending it after correcting the mistakes they send your forms back. Oh and the cost is £50 or something for the form, and then you have to also pay for Vehicle duty. Then you get you're V5 and can get plates.

Word of warning - Either phone or talk to someone at the DVLA, do not use postal only. I have huge problems waiting for responses, but then phone and got someone's email and the whole thing went much quicker.

Thanks Niall that's really helpful.

Quick update, the defender is now insured and MOT'd. We filling in the forms now for registration but does anyone one know what the tax situation is? The vehicle tax scheme changed in April do you think we'll get hit with this £1500 or whatever for the first year or is this only for new vehicles?
