A up,
Just got a second hand lt77 for my 90, it has a genuine LR recon plate with the following numbers stamped on, can anyone identify them for me please? And who reconditioned Land Rover boxes for LR or was it in house?

RTC6999R
PB54506

The last number is also stamped where the 56a*** box number would normally be.
Cheers

suffix f 50a def lt77, which was box for all 4 cylinders except tdi 56a been for tdi, though will fit and drive the same just fractionally slower, the last number is the firm that reconditioned the box own number several firms have reconditioned lr units over the years

strengthened ? no its just a std box, suffix g would be the best version if there was a best version but you wouldnt notice generally, prior to suffix f rev gear never really engaged fully and those boxes usually have issues with reverse as they age

Yeah was wondering whether it was one of the strengthened boxes that I've been told exist but think that was the 56A boxes (may be wrong) but on the whole it's not a bad box then considered it's been recon'd about 11k ago or so I've been told.

they didnt make strengthened boxes as such ,just improved them as they went on , a g suffix 50a or 56a are of the same just slight different input ratio, h suffix was the last lt77 but had compound baulk rings on 1st and 2nd which can be more prone to failure than the single type used on g suffix and all previous

Ahh okay. Cheers for your help on this, I couldn't figure out what age/type of box it was with those numbers. Thanks James.

This is the mainshaft in my (old) "recon" box. What's your opinions of the splines? Cheers

So if I stick in a new cross drilled transfer gear its worth fitting (the current one is goosed) ? Think it's worn due to an old transfer box being fitted to it after the lt77 was overhauled. Would the wear be classed as acceptable or excessive?

with a cross drilled gear it would be acceptable , when i recon a box id fit a new shaft, but if i had a box with a shaft as shown id happily fit it ,on the understanding its a used box

Right ok, when I got it I didn't expect it to be perfect considering I only paid £80 for the box plus delivery. Im just sick of my current one slipping out of first gear. I will put a new gear in this one, stick it in and sort out the one that's currently in properly. I had considered putting a new mainshaft in too but it's a big job for me given the specialist tools needed which I don't have.
