Recon engine

I broke a cambelt on my 2.5td/19J and looked around for prices on reconditioned engines. A proper job seems to be £1650 / 1850 plus VAT! but they are back to standard etc etc. Still got to put your old (and tired) parts onto it and put it in...If I had a TDI I would have considered spending the cash more seriously but that cost is 2/3 the value of the LR and anyway...I looked on Ebay for a few weeks. These engines come up reguarly as cast offs from engine upgrades. I picked one up for £360 complete but no starter and put it in over a weekend. Started first go and only smokes half as much as the original lump. Goes better too. I put it in for a smoke test and it flew through with a 1.87 average reading. One is bound to come up within 100 miles or so in a few weeks but obviously there is some risk its a dud. Still you'd have a good collection of spares..AndyC. More difficult if you cant collect it and need some else to put it in etc.

I would say it is worth it, but then again, you could pick up a good TDI second hand for the same price.

Thanks for your help, can't get it through the MOT see-emissions are no good. If im gona keep it would put a 200 in definatly, but thought they were really expensive!!
