Recently aquired a 1974 series III. Can anybody tell me about free wheeling hubs?

I am looking to make myn series III 88" a little more economical to run.
I am in the process of sorting out an LPG conversion and want to know more about free wheeling hubs and how they work, what they cost and how they effect performance.
 
get yourself a overdrive much better then freewheeling hubs? if you dont click them in regarlar u get dry railko bush the oil dont get flicked about!
 
I had fwh on my 109 when I got it and for about 3 months thereafter. They were a pain to have to get out and engage every time I needed 4wd so when I swapped the axle for a better one I didn't bother putting them back on. I can't say I've noticed any difference.
 
free wheelers disconnect the wheel hub from the drive train so when your in 2wd your front wheels aren't going to all the effort of turning half shafts, front diff and prop. Had them on my 1st Landy, a swb III but never bothered with them much until I was towing long distance on the motorway...foot flat down.....disengaged hubs at the services and average speed went from 50 to 55mph......dont sound alot but thats 10%!
Always use them now even though getting out to engage hubs is a bit of a pain its gotta be worth it.
Driving a IIa lwb with freewheelers now and just fitted overdrive.....its AMAZING!!! Makes so much difference......especially towing, being able to change half a gear at a time means you can keep the revs just where you want them and driving on the open road at 60mph with the engine just purring in an old series is an experience everyone should have!
Given a choice of one or the other I'd have to choose the overdrive but will always want both.......hope that helps :p
 
As welditup says, make sure you use them now and then. If you manage to get hold of some fairey ones, be very careful with the plastic seal that holds everything on...they are very difficult to get hold of now. I had to cut and bash mine off on my last trip because the seal had fallen inside...not nice...luckily I had a spare.

mine are AVM ones, don't know anything about them
 
Oh right. I know nothing about them either! I guess the common sense of taking them apart, cleaning, greasing or whatever they require applies! Or jsut leave them until they break, might pay off!
 
Be careful with the freewheel hubs 'cos they stick out beyond the wheels. I snapped one off on a rock in Cornwall once that was sticking out of a verge.
 
easy to fit, need new hub gaskets (pennies), I have had mine off and on several times to change hub seals (2bit-part(****part)) (learned lessons), and when I changes swivels. They get oiled from the ep90, so don't need much attention. Make sure both sides are reading the same (2x4 or 4x4). True they do stick out, and true they make an average 5mph difference, I have AVM ones, too, and o/d, which is fantastic!! left mine engaged for a while to lube the king pins. prob pick them up for £50 or so..
