My gearbox is buggered, to put it bluntly. From what I've been told the synchro hub in third gear has gone and not sure whether its related or not but all other gears are starting to get difficult to select at times. I know Ashcroft do a rebuild kit but how easy would it be for a layman to repair it using this kit and also to replace the synchro hub?

symptoms ?not easy as you need special tools to strip and rebuild ,and rebuild kits arent the best way ,the parts you need is

I spoke to a guy who runs a gearbox rebuild company and knows LT77s and R380s well. It's difficult to get into third gear and I have to 'float' it to get it in. Getting it out, unless the revs match perfectly, is damn near impossible. Even with clutch down and both hands pulling on the gear lever it just won't move. Gentleman I spoke to said it sounds like the synchro hub. Other gears were perfect before and are still ok but are starting to get quite stiff. Oil level is spot on

not much of a rebuild guy then its baulk ring frc8232 youd need to change not synchro hub, synchro hub usual failure is one of the springs holding slipper pads causing jamming not difficulty

To be fair he was diagnosing it over the phone. It is jammed in gear. Even with engine off I still can't get it out of third. So would a baulk ring still be as difficult to replace with DIY tools and facilities?

It's difficult to get into gear sometimes but unless the revs are perfect its near impossible to get out and at times I've had to just turn engine off with it literally jammed in third gear.
Probably easier for me to try and source a decent second hand box

Yep, rebuilding any sort of gear box is complicated. It wouldn't be cost effective to just have the part you mentioned replaced. In my opinion the best thing to do would be to buy a recon box, have it rebuilt or as you say take the risk with a second hand job. Thing is - how long will it last? On the odd occasion my LT77 won't let me in 3rd gear either (once in a blue moon) and then I can't select any gear and it forces me to pull in so I can select 1st again at idle. I'm just so lucky that its so rare that it happens (maybe once a year or so) Weird. Maybe it's just me :D
