Rear Wiper Problem

Hello everyone, I'm very new to this forums!

I've had a wiper problem on my 90 (Td5, 2003) for some times now and it's really giving me headaches, so I thought this place could be a good info source...

So on to my problem: rear wiper is dead, I took it to a generic garage and they said the motor works as they have been able to power it up from the cables coming out of rear door. But then they said they run out of time (!?) and they gave up.

I've got a multimeter tester and the switch on the dash board seems to be working, while it doesn't detect any voltage in the BLG to Black circuit that the switch is suppose to close. Fuse is in order. Changed the relay in the back door, no effect.

The water pump on rear door works and activate fine and I believe motor and pump share part of the circuit (I've checked the diagram, but I can't figure out anything else).

I don't know if it's related at all, but I have some sort of white plug hanging underneath the chassis, it's connected to a black and a white cable which disappear in a bigger plastic tube; I haven't been able to find a location where it could have been connected.

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!!
 
Just a thought on the orphan white plug. On my TD5 90 (2003 like yours) the connector to the fuel filter (under the o/s rear wheelarch) is white......and if your fuel filter is like my new one it hasn't got a socket for the plug - so the white plug is left without a home, so to speak. I can't remember what colour the wires are to it, but black & white sound familiar. Can't be certain and forgive me if I don't go out and check my 90 but it's p***ing down with rain :)
Is your white plug under the wheel arch, or nearby?
 
The motor magnets are stuck to the side of the housing with something like kiddies gloy gum (remember that???!!!) and have come loose. Either get e new motor or (what i did was) take the motor apart and re-glue the magnets to the housing using harold-tight. When you take it apart you will find them stuck to the motor coils!
 
Have you tried to replicate what the garage did?

I would like to do it, but not really sure how

My "orphan plug" is not located under the wheel arch, but underneath the vehicle centre, above the exaust right behind the engine, but it's an area I can't access easily, too tight. I'll try and get a picture tomorrow.

the garage people said the motor was fine as they powered it up via door cables, they actually left it not in"park" position so they did actually move it someway. Also I did get another motor amd tried to connect it before mounting it up, but no life too.


Anyone knows what kind of path the wiring take? I have a feeling something has disconnected/detached, but don't really know where to look.
As the tester said there was no voltage in the cables in the dashboard, I believe power is lost somewhere.
 
you will not get voltage at the rear wiper switch it switches the ground of the wiper relay(black chassis ground ,black/light green relay return) have you checked the relay is switching both ways feeds park switch on wiper motor when not energized and wiper motor direct when energized.should have feed on white/green cable from fuse 10.
relay connections 85 white green,86 black/green(85 & 86 coil connections)
87 white/green ,87a brown/light green ,30 red/light green ( switches 30 & 87 or 30 & 87a) hope it's of help

I have some developments. Thanks, your suggestion did help, at least telling me where the feed was as I had no idea!
So, I used multimeter on white/green and metal piece on chassis and I did receive a voltage. Tested black green coming out of relay and again on chassis, it did give a voltage.
So I went again checking the switch on dashboard and this time did give a voltage when connecting black/green with black, I guess I wasn't doing it correctly before, but also it told me the wiring going back to switch and from switch to ground is ok.

Now, I did another test with wiper switch ON and white/green feed did not give anymore voltage.
I had someone keep on turning wiper switch on and off while I kept the tester connected and I could see voltage appearing and disappearing from white/green. Is this supposed to happen? Shouldn't the switch (via relay action)only transfer power to red/light green in order to activate the motor?

I'm no electrician, but I'm really confused now.
 
the white /green should be live when ignition switch on live at relay terminal 85 & 87 the relay should when energized feed wiper motor via red/light green . to confirm wiper motor is ok link white / green with red /light green if motor runs switch ignition off so as to stop the wiper arm half way. remove link and link white /green to brown/light green switch ignition on wiper should return and park if it does change the relay

Ok I tried what you said, but motor dindn't seem to have any life at all.
so that puzzled me as it should have, since I do detect power on the white/green wire.

I thought to check on a different circuit (rear washer pump) to see how the voltage looks like and it turns out it's properly 12V, while the one I'm detecting in my wiper circuit is barely 4V, how is this possible? And more important, where are the other 8V missing?
 
when you are measuring the voltage are you unplugging the wiper motor and measuring across white /green and a good clean ground on the chassis ,would also check for corroded joint on the white/green starting checking joint A7 ,A15 and A1 then At the wiper motor plug .you should have 12 volt at A7 as you say your washer are working run a temp wire from washer pump white/green as repeat previous test linking white/green feed to washer pump and red/light green to wiper motor if the wipers work the problem lies in the joints A1 &A15
 
Ok we are going in the right direction.

I tested the feed on C0377 connector and there is a good 12V
On C0704 (while unplugged fomr C1102) there is 3-4V.
so the problem lies in this section which include the A91 joint (90 correspondent for the A15 you mentioned).

So where is this A91? from the C0377 connector, cables go into the harness, which go into chassis and doesn't come back out until back wheel arch, and right after there is the C0704.
Am I supposed to pull the whole harness out? I wouldn't really be happy to do that and rather leave the wiper dead, but it has now become a siatuation of principle ;)
 
check voltage on C0735-3 connector rear right hand wheel arch water fill sensor.unless you have had welding or drilling done on the right hand chassis leg then cant see you having problems with chassis loom unless damaged where it enters or exits chassis.a91 must be a connection drivers corner of bulkhead as the replacement loom shows connectors there

I was looking for that connector earlier today, as I've seen on diagram that A91 connects to water filter sensor, but I couldn't find it! To be honest I couldn't find the sensor either (I looked at the picture on rave manual and I couldn't see anything looking alike).

I will look again tomorrow.

I have sorted the problem out...
Both power feed and earth were cut behind the RH wheel arch,in side the plastic protection! And it was really difficult to access. Must have been a problem the previous owner already had as there was an attempt on a repair.

Working fine now.
