Hello

My vehicle is the freelander td4 3 door VAN ver 1 - 2002

For some reason the 'rear window' will NOT operate from the on dash 'up/down' switch, with the ignition on or off.

If you open the tailgate, the rear window automatically drops as normal to clear the bodywork and when the tailgate is shut the window automatically raises as normal.

I've plugged in the 'Hawkeye' hand diagnostic device and tested the circuitry and I can 'raise and lower' the rear window fully using the hand held device.

There are NO dtc fault codes when checked using the device.

1) Is there any other way of determining the main dash board SWITCH is at fault?

If it is where can I buy one from?

2) If its the rear window RELAY? How can I be sure it is and where can I get one from?

Also on the TD4 van version where is the RELAY actually located?

Can anyone provide pics to the location?

I have occasionally used a 'jet wash' on the vehicle and wash under both rear wheel arches.

On inspecting the rear boot tool box compartment, theres quite a bit of dampness on the right (drivers side) as if waters got in??

Could this be the cause possibly and how could I water get in from the outside?

why don't you take switch off and short cables out to mimic operation of switch.

As it works from hawkeye, I would discount the relay, this must be working for the window to lower / raise. Hawkeye only mimics the input signals to the ecu, it can't bypass the rear window relay.

Is there anything else that could STOP the rear window from working via the dasboard switch?

I recently put a brand new battery on the vehicle.

The hard top has never been removed since i've owned it.

Does the rear window need re programming?

I tried turning the ignition fully without cranking and pressed the 'unlock' button on the remote key fob - still nothing!

There is a fuse in slot 30 which covers rear wiper and rear window, fuse in tact.

i just replaced the tailgate window regulator on my 2002 freelander the window went down but will not go up. why? I saw a message aboute recalibrating, how is that done?
 
Hmmn, normal to introduce yourself before demanding help, a please might have gone a long way too.

No matter.

Turn the ignition on, then drive the window up using the switch until it beeps twice. It should then go back down and you can drive it up again on the switch and it is done.

Should you require any further info, you could always try rtfm.

obviously, this needs to be done with the tailgate closed.
 
The plot thickens!

I stripped out the back door panel to check connections and wiring - all seem to be ok, no chaffing etc.

With the ignition 'ON' the switch to operate the rear window does absolutely nothing - up / down.

I connected the hawkeye and checked the circuitry for the rear window operation - up / down correct using the hawkeye to control.

With the rear window down, disconnected the hawkeye - pressed the switch to raise the rear window - nothing!

Connected the hawkeye back - raised the window.

Disconnected the hawkeye - pressed the switch to lower & the rear window dropped fully - would not raise using the switch!

There seems to be a problem with the wiring & I wouldn't know where to start - also whilst checking the circuitry with the hawkeye - an on screen indication suggested the 'RH headlamp' was on?

The fuse for the rear wiper was in place - the hawkeye picked up the rear wiper 'ON / OFF' selection I made - but the wiper motor didn't function.

The same with the rear wiper pump - no water pumped through - yet the hawkeye suggested otherwise.


As for calibration of the rear window, theres no chance I can do that.

The inertia switch is 'ON'

The hard top microswitch is also 'ON'


Any ideas?

Changed the dashboard switch and made no difference.

The rear window doesn't drop any at all now when the rear door handle is pressed slightly to open the door.

Hawkeye registers me pressing the rear window up and down switch, testing the live circuits. But window stays shut!

Hawkeye is the only thing that can open / shut rear window!

Hawkeye registers tail window is 'OFF' and tail window crtl is 'CLOSED'

I can hear a clicking sound coming from the rear of the vehicle when the dashboard switch is pressed down only.

I presume that is the 'relay' ??
 
Have you checked the rear wiper?

If it is not parked off of the glass and onto the rubber at the bottom on the glass, then the CEM will not let the window open from the dash swith.

There is a micro switch in the rear wiper motor that tells the CEM when the wiper is parked correctly. If the micro switch is not working then you can't operate the window from the dash switch.

My rear wiper is jammed about 4 inchs above the parked position. The rear glass moves to open the door but the rear window does not operate from the dash switch or the remote fob.

Can the Hawkeye read engine data on your can? If so what can it read, I keep looking for a reader but keep getting told that its not supported on diesels before 2004 (or 2006 can never remember the year)
 
The rear wiper motor is now inoperable.

The rear de icing demister is also inoperable.

The rear window is completely out of action, it doesn't even budge when opening the door handle.

The rear wiper arm and blade were missing from the vehicle when i bought it but the rear window always worked.

Thanks for the replies i will try and find the microswitches for the rear wiper.
I have located the hard top microswitch and with the hard top on the hawkeye says the the switch is made. However on lifting the top slightly the mswitch doesnt pop up that much?

Where are the relays located for the rear systems and what type do i need if i have to replace?

If the rear wiper arm has been removed, then I would suspect that the rear wiper packed up, like mine has.

If it didn't stop in the parked position, like mine, then the rear window will only operate to open the door.

My heated rear windows packed up ages before everything else, there is a know issue with the bit of flexy cable that moves with the window. The conductors tend to break due to the movement.
 
The rear motor was ok, it was just the blade arm was snapped so got removed.

However there is no movement now when the rear wiper button is pressed.

When i press the rear window de mist button on the dash next to the hazard light - theres no light indication.

So looking through the haynes manual i cannot find the location of the rear wiper microswitches.

Are they actually in the rear wiper motor itself?

As for the flexy cable that wears out. Is the loom unplugabble and replaceable?

Ive got to say the hawkeye is pretty useless in pinpointing what the fault is!!

£300 for a device thats only good for opening and closing a window ! :D

I also made sure the CCU unit wasn't in transit mode - haynes 12:19 para 24.

According to Rave manual, there are 2 microswitchs for the rear wiper. One is the park position and the other is the top position.

The park position is switched when the wiper is parked in the proper place off the glass.

When you turn of the wiper, the CCU waits for the wiper to get to the top of its movement, then reverses the motor to park the wiper.

I assume that the switches are integrated into the motor mechanism itself, but i have not stripped mine down yet to look at it.
 
As for the hawkeye device, from my viewpoint its an expensive device that doesn't really do a lot for my 2001 TD4 - its quite embarrassing, frustrating and annoying, when I think of the money I shelled out for it. :(

In comparison to a BMW diagnostic setup I had (EasyDis / Inpa / SSS Progman) it's lacking greatly in, indepth system diagnostics.

It may do more on newer TD4's, but I doubt it.

The micro switches must be inside the motor itself as I haven't located them anywhere near or on the rear wiper motor!

The haynes manual does not mention them either - unless I missed the info.

I've ascertained its NOT the rear window dash switch or the two rear relays, drivers rear side near the strut top - as they have all been changed over today.

I've had the rear door panel off again today - all the wiring looms look good, all taped up on the bended areas and areas where the looms touch the bodywork.

No visible signs of chaffing / broken wires anywhere.

When the hawkeye was disconnected briefly the dash rear window switch did lower the window once - the CCU chirped when the window was at its lower limit.

I tried to raise but no joy.

Connected the hawkeye - raised it with that.

Disconnected - used manual switch to lower and nothing!!


Can anyone tell me does the Hawkeye bypass the CCU when I'm testing the system circuitry with it?

The hawkeye operates the rear window no problem.

The hawkeye also registers on the LCD screen - all dashboard manual switch selections made by myself.

Wipers on/off - Lights on/off - doors locked / unlocked etc

I'm wondering if the CCU unit itself behind the fuse box is faulty??

How much for a new / reconditioned / reprogrammed CCU (if programmable)??

Anyone got any ideas? :whoosh:

I started from scratch, I disconnected the battery for 30 mins.

Shut all doors.

Reconnected the battery, the rear window went down automatically.

Turned on the alarm and locked the doors.

Unlocked the doors and disarmed (the window was still down at this point)

Pressed the rear window - DOWN switch - the CCU beeped twice (from behind the fusebox)

Hey presto the rear window decided to raise when the UPPER part of the switch was pressed!! :D:D:D

No hawkeye connected either.

Unbelievable, but issue seems to have been sorted.

I did at the end of January this year replaced the battery BUT DIDN'T re-calibrate at the time - maybe that was the cause of this thread issue??

After a thorough re-greasing of the runners and cables all is back together.

Window calibrates as in haynes and other procedures noted on here.

However after 3 or 4 days the rear window needs calibrating again!

Any ideas. And yes I'd followed the procedure correctly everytime.
