I have searched but can't find the answer ....

I like stainless steel, A2 or A4 are about as strong as brass and polish up nice, Martensitic 416-HT is sexy as hell but rare and expensive.

I was thinking of replacing the rear door bolts, there are lots of A2 and A4 kits out there and i'm sure that they wouldn't be selling them if they couldn't take the forces applied.

The OEM steel bolts have a 15mm head whereas the Stainless offerings, Cap-head or pozi pan-heads, only have a 10mm diam head.

Even those clearly identified as "Land Rover Defender rear Safari Door hinge screws" <Pozi Pan Head> are 1/2 the effective area ....

Does anyone know if there are any "oversized head" screws out there in Stainless ??

Are the OEM bolts available ??

An update ...

Real (conforming to the DIN standard) cap-head machine screws have a 15mm head with either a slotted (cheese) or pozi (cross recessed) head, ie like the OEM. Some Chinese versions are smaller at 1/2". Socket cap head set screws have a 13mm head (if they meet the ISO) and Torx button heads are 14mm ...

So the standard OEM steel bolts are just that "standard" (DIN 7985). Chinese copies tend to be a little smaller. So the key is to get ones that meet the standard (google is your friend).

Interestingly I was looking at some Britpart hinge kits last night that a friend had recently bought. The hinges were supplied with nickle plated steel raised countersunk machine screws, the longer of the two had 15mm heads and the shorter 14.5mm. The shorter were to the standard so OK, however the long ones didn't fit in the recess on the hinge as they were 0.5mm oversize..

Even the ones that did fit were tight, so tight that I think with a coat of paint there's no way they would fit in ...

I see now why they are called "****part" :rolleyes:

So in answer to my question ;

You don't need "oversize" you just need the "right size" :)

In a final twist to this story AMS Bugbolts who sell on eBay linky have some with a 15.8mm head diameter.

I'm going for these as the bigger head should offer a better solution.
