OK you know how when you drive with the rear window open (especialy when towing) you get a wiff of exhaust .
Well today it smelt of oil  got out to have a look and diff had a film of oil down the back that was blowing onto the exhaust ,
later at home I got her up on the lift and took out the drain/level plug and out came a glug of oil-water emulsion .
So two questions arise how did the water get in there without wading through deep water and how do you get it out as there is no drain plug in the bottom of the diff?
Short of removing the prop and dismantling the diff I cant see a obvious plan.
All ideas considered:)

Maybe you can get a small tube in there and suck the oil out of there. There are some "pumps" you can put on a watertap for pressure. They might work...

How did it get in there? Condensation that is drawn as the diff cools after each run. It suggests your diff is running hot. Check your VCU immediately for siezing. It could be the warning signs us Hippo owners dread, a knackered VCU leads to a knackered IRD and / or a blown rear diff.

should be able to remove the cover plate on the face of the diff, be sure to have the replacement gasket before you do though.

Happen it was the large amount of snow that wedged its self under the body after a over ambitious off road foray,
The upside its really clean underneath :)

Raise your diff breather with some washer jet tubing. I ran mine through a blanking grommet, up behind the fog/reversing light cluster and back down through the grommet again, I also put an in-line filter on it.
Costs less than a fiver.

Hi Longdog that sounds like a good idea will do that just as soon as I've managed to drain out all the sludge .
I reckon that with one of those drill mounted pumps and a bit of tube it should be possible, though I cant think they dont fit a drain plug as there seems to be a boss in the bottom of the diff housing that looks like it could house a drainage plug:(
The good news is I tried the famous Tippex test this morning and all seems to be working as it should:)
Off to find a pump now

Changed all four to 195/15/r Camac for the winter ,will have to stick the road bias tyres back on come the summer though shes a bit noisy on rough tarmac (so thats most roads round here:()
ANY

you can get the same sort of syringe from your local agricultural supplies
outlet single use about £1.50.
I used one for filling the brake lines on my bike from the caliper upwards- it pushes the air bubbles up to the master cylinder
