Evening all.

I need to replace the vcu bearings on my v6 2001 Freelander. Just done 23,000 miles. Whist looking at these I had a look at the rear diff front mount and the front prop to coupling connection.

The video below shows the movement. Can someone advise:

  • If the rear diff front mount bush needs changed – think it does
  • Also if the rear diff prop input is turning too much. Think I read on here recently 1/8 turn is the recommended limit, but not sure as I can’t find it at the moment.
  • If the front prop to coupling movement needs looking into. Iplan to fit a gaiter to replace the rubber soon – write up when it’s down.
Thanks

Thanks for that.

I think the movement is in this bit, at the end of the prop inside the collar thing:

It's only 1mm movement, if that. As I plan to fit a gaiter over it whilst the props off, I thought it best to fix also if needs be.

Does anyone know what grease I should put inside once the gaiters in place?

Diff mount definitely needs replacing. Not sure about input shaft. Are you getting any grinding noises from rear on full lock?

By the way, liking the videos and photos, hopefully they'll help future freelander owners diagnose and fix problems. All helps.

cv joint grease, i'm sure it can be bought in sachets. it is a graphite type grease i think, how did you get on with the anti roll bar bushes hippo?

I don’t get any grinding noises on reverse lock. New bush is on order from the stealer. I’ve given them so much hassle over dodgy work they know me when I only give my first name.

I like the idea of pictures too. I’m happy for people to link to them (right click and select properties to see the location where they’re stored). The hippophoto mark in them is due to having problems with a troll playing games. Just ignore it and post them up if it helps others. I’ll put up some before and after video’s of the centre bush movement so others can see the difference, after I’ve fitted the new one.

I haven’t sorted the anti roll bushes. The fault stopped after I asked the question. It then passed an mot, and the bloke couldn’t see anything wrong. Yesterday it came back so I’ll have a look while I’m under it at the weekend and see if I can pin point the location. Bought myself some chassis ears recently. £100 off fleebay. 3rd of the price of what they were 2 years ago. Kit made by alba. Has 6 sensors and also an electronic stethoscope too. Hopefully this will help to pin point the problem. I’ll probably end up flogging them on fleebay when I’ve finished.

When you order a replacement gaiter it should come with the grease provided. Ask before you order, if they say not, buy it somewhere else!!
Ordered a stretching gaiter off ebay today. Comes with some grease as you suggest. Comes with a tool to allow you to stretch it over things. Made by these people: Home and there’s a video to watch here: Cone Fitting Video I’ll post something up on the previous topic on the prop gaiter thread if I manage to do it at the weekend. I’ve also bought some hose clips to hold it in place. We’re thinking the fact that this gaiter is more flexible than normal, will allow it to survive the constant flexing as the prop etc spins round. It’s worth a try.

While I’m here… I’ve seen many good write ups on here. I’ve done a few write-ups myself, on things I’ve taken apart or fixed. I’m far from an expert on mechanics, but like to dabble. If it’s ok with you lot I’d like to do the same on here. Similar to busters write-ups, but I won’t be wearing pink. Is this ok and do you post them on here first, then someone moves them to the technical section, or post them in the technical section directly. Not really sure of the protocol on here and wouldn’t want to offend anyone. I’m still writing up my v6 cam belt change. Got a few write-ups on the way like the center diff mount (not sure if it’s already been done) and the air con compressor clutch bearing replacement.

Hello again

Ok it's a totaly different car but I put those cone thingies on the cv joints of my Matiz. They were a tw*t to put on (dunk them in red hot water) but seem to be holding up alot better than the normal rubber ones. Obviously they must be good cos the matiz has an 800cc engine and pumps out 52bhp and owt that can stand those sorts of pressures must be good:D:D

I'd replace all the rear diff mounts - you end up with play on the l/r mounts if you sort the centre - £45 all three at Island4x4 -

Thanks. Forgot to check the others. It was dark when I finnished connecting the prop. Will buy the others and also fit.

Ive just bought a freelander and the front prop was disconnected and the front coupling has split and in 2 bits now prop has 3 balls on.and i have the coupling on the back seat.disconnected rear prop and got it home.

Can i buy just the front coupling or do i need a full front prop. And how easy is it to fit.t will be fully removed and all uj and bearing done at same time just need to no bout the front

Where is the video link ? I have been contemplating changing all my mounts front and rear for a few weeks now, but am waiting on some good weather to get under and check them all properly, as I only have done a visual check so far.

What type of bearings did you get 23k out of Hippo?
I just changed mine recently and found the ones which had been fitted a year ( 6k miles covered) previous by a garage who told me they only used genuine gkn had actually fitted bearings made by made by BJS..the new supplier of lr parts ...made in India. I was struggling to find a set of gkn ones online and in desparation when I couldnt get any delivered before christmas I went to the local lr dealer and paid full whammy....opened the box and............BJS!!. So I will be on my back again in 11 months.
Just I thought I had about your gaiter. I noticed when my prop shaft was off that the balance weights were fairly small and could almost go un noticed so could be sumthin to think about as some of these hose clips have quite big "worms" for tightening and could end up causing vibrations....I may be talkin shoite but just a thot ;)

Original gkn fitted when it was chucked together by LR. to be fare it had been oft road and bearings submerged in water/clay/sand which doesn't do them good. Mine started to fail so I changed them earlier than I could have.
