Rear Access Ladder

Does anyone have any experience of using a rear access ladder on a Disco-2. I'm thinking about a unit like this:

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 1 & 2 REAR ACCESS LADDER on eBay (end time 11-Jul-10 17:30:33 BST)

But I'm worried it would overload the hinges on the rear door. Obviously you would only use it with the door closed, but interested if anyone uses one or has had any issues?

Exactly the same as mine. When door is shut it's fine, the door is firmly in place. No probs.

ditto...with the door shut it supported fine in the track on the left side..........

if you have a roof rack, or just want to wash the roof, the ladder is worth its weight in gold

i put bigger bolts on me wheel carrier when I inverted it & just climb up that

Thanks for the advice guys. I got a ladder and am about to fit it. Sorry for being a total spanner here, but what's the score with the rivet gun? The instructions show this, but I can't see where the gun comes in? These look like nuts that will pull up when I tighten the allen bolt? What am I missing? Pic attached.

It's a rivnut / nutsert tool

There's a much easier and cheaper way by usin' a suitable bolt and nut..... can't remember right now, but ah'm sure somebody will be along just shortly tellin' ye how to do it

Thanks for looking for the link Buster. When they sell you these things they don't tell you that there's 2 hours of web searching and a ****load of ****ing around to do the b**stard up. I am going to bed angry. I can feel an RAF production coming on....

If you want to use nuts and bolts, M8 bolts and nuts should be ok. Make sure you use nylock nuts. If you are using nuts and bolts, on the top of the rear door where you drill to fit the original nut insert, you have to drill straight thru the upper and lower skin of the frame,then open out the lower holes on the underside of the frame using a taper drill or reamer to approx 15mm to allow you to insert the reaining washer and nut by means of a 13mm 1/4 drive deep socket. Sounds like it is a pain to do but trust me its not.
Once you have tightened the to nuts for the top of the ladder,you can use rubber blanking grommets on the underside of the upper door frame to hide the holes you have drilled and make the job look professional.
