I have just bought a old 90 with 200tdi disco engine

The transfer box stick has diff lock to the left

Is the defender permanent 4wd or is it only when the "diff lock" is in

    Thanks Matt

No it locks the centre diff in the Transfer box, which locks both prop flanges so they turn at same speed. :p

... and in addition to what Pikey (Redhand) has told you above make sure you don't drive it in difflock when you're on the road or any other firm surface where you're not going to lose traction as you'll break it ... probably badly! ;)

Can you confirm that it isn't in diff-lock and that it has both prop shafts underneath?

Rear wheel slide could mean that it only has the rear prop attached, in which case it would need diff lock engaging in order to move! Does it have a front one?

Didnt see that I was writing my post, jumping out of gear is a prob, you should be able to replace parts tho, shouldnt need a new t/ box they are simple technology easy to fix.
