Range rover smoking and whining when reving

Hi Guys i have a 2004 Range rover L322 td6
this morning on the way to work it started to make a whinning noise from the engine when i reved it up?
the engines not over heating ? then when i pulled up i was engulfed in clouds of smoke?
any ideas?

What type/colour of smoke?
White/black/blue/grey?

its thick grey smoke came out when i stopped
the car is running fine at the moment ?
