Rain water leak in boot

Hi, I'm pretty sure this rain water leak started when I fitted an after market towbar. It came with new "D" plates which replaced the originals and I thought the rain water was ingressing from the 4 bolt holes either side of the bumper. However I have sealed the "D" plates yet it still gets in to the box section the bumper is bolted to and then leaks in to the spare wheel well.

Any ideas?

Hey so like I have a jeep, think it is a range rover? The blue ones with an engine? So anyway my jeep keeps cutting out on me, I put in £15 of fuel a week which was how much I put in my scooter. So anyway, why does my jeep cut out?

Just in case anyone has the same issue as i did of my boot spare wheel well filling up with rain water to just below the level of the EAS compressor when it rained after i fitted the westfalia OEM towbar...

Basically the new towbar comes with a self adhesive gasket to seal between the towbar and the back panel which i fitted with the new towbar however after a week and some fairly heavy rain i had a large amount of water in my boot and i think the gasket provided is just too thin.

On the attached pic you can see a lip that folds around the top of the back panel which acts as a funnel for most of the water that runs down either side of the tailgate and then directs it quite efficiently in through the bolt holes and the square cut out in the back panel and into the boot.

My solution, which may have been overkill but i did not want to remove the towbar again, was to use some mastic sealing strip that they use to seal caravans on both the side where the towbar meets the back panel and also in between the towbar and the bumper iron mounting plate and fortunately no more water in the boot.

I literally covered the complete mating area with mastic strip and then poked through the bolts holes.

Hopefully helps somebody in the future

Thanks for posting this. I spotted it posted elsewhere and rechecked the 8 bolts and found one of them leaking in. I originally asked the tow bar manufacturer had they had any issues with leaks and they said no! I thought I'd used enough sealant on my second attempt to refit it but obviously not.

Mine still leaked after this, i ended up getting a a big dollop of body sealer on my finger and wiped it along and under the lip that rolls around the top of the rear chassis and then it finally sealed. i tested the theory before going for the sealer by wiping some thick grease along it first but just go for the sealer, it can't do any harm.
