May be a stupid question but.....

As some of you know, i'm putting a CB into the Defender and getting that hopefully sorted in the next few days. However, there are times, that for work and also other bits and pieces that we use UHF GP340 Radio's....

I spoke to a chap at work today who suggested that this mobile motorola radio GM350 :

which is effectively a taxi radio, will work with the UHF GP340 hand helds we use at work.. it would just be really nice to have a fixed unit in the cab of the landy as well as my CB

However - this is my question...
As most of the mobile units that would be permanently installed would run off a ''mag mount'' type aerial which you wack on the roof - and being the Defender that's a no go - can i use the same aerial as the fixed springer aerial that's being installed on the back of the 90 this week?

Can two things ( CB and mobile walkie talkie ) run off the same aerial?

This may be an absolutely stupid question - in which case, i'm prepared - but i just want to know if it's possible as i really don't know anything about them, other than i need two units to contact the people i need too ( CB and mobile walkie talkie base unit in the car )

Thanks for any advice or help as always and sorry if it's a stupid question in advance!

Soory, it just won't work. CB is 27 Mhz and UHF radios will be between 400 - 470 Mhz. The CB antenna just won't be compatible with the walkie-talkie. In fact if you were to pump the full 25W of the GM350 into a CB antenna you might do it some permanent harm. Sorry - you'll need to install a separate antenna.

Thanks DevonGuy - my feelings and thoughts were justified then!!! The GM350 comes with one of those magmount antennas - can i gutter mount this? is there anything stopping me? Thanks again for helping with a reply!

UHF doesn't require as big a groundplane as CB, so a really good gutter mount might do the trick. You haven't got a nice big roofrack I suppose?

Unfortunately not - it's not as rugged as that - it's still quite smart looking - it's in stornoway grey - beautiful looking thing - far nicer than my wife!!!!! ( hopefully she doesn't check this forum!!! ) - i don't know if it would look strange though with a CB on one side and the UHF antenna on the other side? What do you think??

CB antenna as near to the middle as possible, the uhf can be a bit away - it seems to be more tolerant in my experience.

So difficult deciding where - so many people have the CB springer antenna to the top right hand corner on the back of the 90's which looks good- i think if i was to put it there - i'm just trying to figuire out a good place for the UHF - but i suppose i'm going to have to gutter mount it so it doesn't leave me with too many options.....
